Let’s take a quick look at the first few prime numbers:
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29…
You might notice something cool right away:

They don’t follow a simple pattern

They're scattered across the number line like hidden gems

And most interestingly, they can’t be made by multiplying two smaller whole numbers (except 1 and themselves)
So, what makes prime numbers so beautiful?
Prime Numbers Are the Building Blocks of Math
Just like every word is made of letters, every number is made of prime numbers. This is called the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic (don’t worry, we won’t quiz you on that name!).
For example:

12 can be broken down into 2 × 2 × 3

30 becomes 2 × 3 × 5
Each of those parts 2, 3, and 5 is prime. That means prime numbers are like the atoms of math; they build up everything else!
