Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

Mayra Ornelas

Regional Director

Mayra graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology and brings a thoughtful, encouraging energy to her role as Center Director. She loves listening to music, cheering on the Dodgers, and spending quality time with family and friends.

At Mathnasium, Mayra’s favorite moments are when students grasp a difficult concept and light up with excitement. She believes math is for everyone—and she’s passionate about helping each student see their own potential.

Diego Hernandez

Assistant Center Director

Diego Hernandez graduated with an Associate in Business Administration and a certification in the CPA track program from Santa Monica College. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Accounting and Analytics at CSU East Bay as a fully online student. Mathematics has always had a special place in his life. After the Covid-19 quarantine, Diego returned to school with renewed motivation, determined to explore math as deeply as possible.

What began as a pursuit of quick, clever solutions grew into a deeper appreciation for the structure and elegance behind mathematical reasoning. As a previous instructor, Diego embraces the Mathnasium method, which emphasizes strong foundations, creativity, and ingenuity—principles he believes all students deserve. In the future, he hopes to pursue a Master’s in Pure Mathematics as a personal academic project.

Outside of academics, Diego enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, watching movies, working out, and playing Fortnite, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans.

Jonathan Johnson

Assistant Center Director

Jonathan, also known as Jon Jon, holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a minor in Mathematics from UCLA. He has taught calculus as a teaching associate at CSUN and has tutored college students in calculus, pre-calculus, and statistics. His academic interests span logic, set theory, and the philosophy of math and science.

At Mathnasium, Jonathan enjoys helping younger students engage with math in meaningful ways. When he's not teaching, he loves solving Rubik’s cubes and playing puzzle video games.

Dylan

Instructor

Dylan graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2023 and then Santa Monica College in 2025 and is currently attending UCLA as an Environmental Science Major. He loves math and science, especially ecology, and cares about helping his students love these subjects too. He believes math should feel useful and even enjoyable, not just a memorization slog. In his free time, he does mountain biking, surfing, theatre, and music.

Conrad

Instructor

Hello! I'm Conrad and I am one of the instructors that grant children a better understanding of math here. I was born in Berkeley and spent nearly my entire life living in the eastern Bay Area. Math has been my favorite School subject since preschool and I have excelled in every math class I've been in (Geometry was pretty tough though). I moved to Santa Monica with my family after I graduated from high school in 2024 and have been attending Santa Monica College ever since. My interests other than math include computer programming, modern history, economics and cats!

Joseph

Instructor

Hey I’m Joseph! I graduated from Berkeley with a BA in Russian Literature, but I’d study math if I could do it all again! I think math is beautiful like art or music. You can walk around a whole mathematical universe with only your mind. I find that fascinating. I am so convinced that math is fun that I made it my job at Mathnasium. Best choice ever. Beyond math, I like studying world religions, martial arts, and staring up at the night sky

Kevin Zhao

Instructor

Hey there! I'm Kevin, an instructor at Mathnasium. I grew up in China and came to the U.S. to study physics at UC Santa Barbara. Math has been one of my favorite subjects from a young age. I enjoy the challenge of tricky math problems, but math has always been more than just problem-solving to me. To me, it’s the language of nature—from plants and insects to the stars above us. I am excited to learn about their language, and I want to also share this excitement to the kids here at Mathnasium. Outside of Math and physics (an applied version of Math), I also enjoy camping, cooking, and watching movies.

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

What I love about Mathnasium is the ability to teach problem-solving skills and make math make sense, while also making a student smile.
