When students move from Algebra into Geometry, it can feel like they are beginning an entirely different kind of math. Suddenly, there are triangles, circles, angles, transformations, proofs, and diagrams.
But Algebra doesn't disappear when Geometry begins.
In fact, many Geometry problems rely heavily on Algebra skills. Students may understand the geometric concept perfectly well but still struggle to reach the correct answer because of difficulties solving an equation, working with fractions, simplifying an expression, or manipulating a formula.

Students also encounter fractions throughout Geometry when calculating measurements or working with formulas. Confidence with fractions can therefore make these topics considerably easier.
Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Geometric measurements aren't always presented as simple numbers.
A side might be represented by an algebraic expression, for example, requiring the student to simplify expressions and combine like terms before or during the solution.
These Algebra skills allow students to concentrate on the Geometry rather than becoming stuck on the calculations.
Coordinate Planes and Slope
Coordinate Geometry is one of the clearest places where Algebra and Geometry meet.
Students may use coordinates to investigate lines, shapes, parallel and perpendicular relationships, transformations, and geometric properties.
Understanding the coordinate plane and slope gives students an important foundation for working confidently with these problems.
Exponents and Square Roots
Students encounter exponents and square roots when working with some of Geometry's most recognizable concepts, particularly the Pythagorean theorem.
A student might understand that a² + b² = c², but they still need to be comfortable squaring numbers and finding square roots to use the relationship effectively.
The same skills are valuable when working with distance and other geometric calculations.
Rearranging and Using Formulas
Geometry introduces many formulas involving area, perimeter, circumference, surface area, and volume.
Students need more than the ability to memorize them. They need to identify the correct information, substitute values accurately, and sometimes rearrange a formula to find an unknown quantity.
