Let's learn a bit more about what a Comprehensive Assessment at Mathnasium of Simpsonville looks like.

Q: What is a comprehensive assessment?

A: Mathnasium's comprehensive assessment is a test that is given to each student prior to their enrollment. Trained assessors use the results and observations from this test to meet students at their individual level.

Q: What things do you learn about a student when they take a comprehensive assessment?

A: A few things that we can tell from these assessments include any knowledge gaps, inefficient processes, what students already know, how well students can explain their thinking.

Q: What is a customized learning plan?

A: A customized learning plan is a list of topics that we want to review with a student. We use the comprehensive assessment to create the initial learning plan, and use ongoing assessments and observations to tweak this plan as the student stays with us. The goal is to meet students where they are and to push them to be the best mathematician they can be!

Q: How do you gauge progress?

A: We gauge progress through observation of how students work through a topic, and assessments such as mastery checks and progress checks. Mastery checks assesses how well a student understands a topic at the end of the coverage of that topic. A progress check is an assessment that checks how much students remember after about three months worth of practice. If students are using an efficient method and getting answers correct, especially months after learning it, then we know that they have mastered the concept.
