Malone and I are seen as a math power couple. I got my Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah. I specialize in math’s applications to everyday life; my students are often amazed when I explain to them how much math is used in music, art, and even sports! Seeing how life around us uses math – like Fibonacci spirals in ammonite fossils or fractal patterns in lightning – is one of my favorite parts of teaching math to my students, as once they start to notice it, they will see it everywhere! My interests include guitar, chess, video games, and biomedical engineering (all of which use math!). I usually can find an interest I share with my students that I can then use to say, “See? You have been using math this whole time without even realizing it!” I’m particularly known for my incredible jokes. I find that learning is much easier when you’re having fun, so whether my jokes make my students laugh or simply shake their heads with a smile on their face, I know I got their attention. The more I can engage my students in their personalized learning plans, the more I feel like I can make a difference in their lives. That is how I make math make sense.
