Q1: What advice would you give parents who want to help their child start the school year with confidence?

A1: One piece of advice I'd give parents who want their student to start the school year with confidence is to have them review the foundational skills from the previous year. Being able to start the school year feeling good about adding and subtracting for students in 1st and 2nd grade is a huge game changer. The same is true for 3rd-6th grade students with their multiplication skills. For older students, reviewing the core concepts can make a major difference!

Q2: What are some of the most common math challenges students face at the beginning of a new school year?

A2: The start of the school year is fraught with new homework and high expectations. Students transitioning from grade school to middle school often struggle to finish homework. It is super hard for students and parents to effectively communicate how problems should be completed, especially when the way math is taught changes from generation to generation. This effectively creates a math language barrier and causes a lot of tension for families. Getting students started at Mathnasium can help relieve that tension and help students learn to problem solve more independently.

Q3: What makes this time of year exciting at your Mathnasium center?

A3: What makes this time of year so incredible at Mathnasium is being able to connect with all of our students- new, old, and current. Students who are returning have great stories from their travels, new students are excited to catch up for the new school year and build connections with their instructors, and current students are having fun participating in in-center events and activities. Intentionally fostering these connections helps our students feel seen and supported!
