Mathnasium of Spokane South: Building Strong Math Skills for Summer + Real-Life Confidence

Apr 15, 2026 | Spokane South

Q1: Why is it important for students to continue learning math over the summer?

A1:
Continuing math over the summer helps our students keep the skills they learned this year sharp and prevent the dreaded summer slide. Often, when students return to school in the fall, they have regressed and forgotten a few skills. For students that aren't at grade level, this is a great time for us to focus on building skills that will help them be successful and keep working toward achieving grade level.

Q2: How does your center help prevent summer learning loss?

A2:
We help prevent summer learning loss (also known as the summer slide) by having students practice skills they learned this school year, as well as, priming them for what may come next. Students who continue to attend over the summer get the opportunity to strengthen skills that might have been hard to master when balancing homework, sports, and all sorts of other activities. The summer allows our students to slow down and really focus on topics that are challenging, and allows us to help them fill in those gaps.

Q3: How can math skills help students in real-life situations like saving money or budgeting?

A3:
Math skills help students in real-life situations like budgeting and money-spending by showing the relationship between numbers. Financial literacy is being introduced to more school curriculums and we love supporting our students' ability to decipher what are good money choices and what might not be the wisest. When we show our students that money is math and it has real-life applications, we strengthen the connection between life and math for them.
