What do you like most about learning?
What I love most about learning is that it is a lifelong journey with no true finish line. There is always something new to discover. No two people learn in exactly the same way and the endless opportunities to grow are what make learning so fun and rewarding.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
As an elementary school teacher, the biggest impact I had was helping students build confidence in math and watching their skills grow throughout the year. Being part of that growth and helping them develop a stronger foundation in math was one of the most meaningful parts of teaching.
What type of math do you enjoy teaching most?
I enjoy math that involves problem-solving and critical thinking because it encourages students to explore different strategies and explain their reasoning. I find it rewarding when students realize there is often more than one way to solve a problem and begin to build confidence in their mathematical thinking.
How do you make learning math fun for students?
I make learning fun by making connections to students' interests and incorporating hands-on, interactive activities whenever possible. I believe students learn best when they are actively engaged, so I try to create opportunities for problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world connections. When students are enjoying the learning process and feel invested in what they're doing, they are more motivated to participate and retain what they learn.

What do you like most about learning?
I enjoy learning math specifically because I find it interesting to see the different ways people approach the same problem. There are various ways to approach a problem and still arrive at the right answer, and it’s fun to figure out which approach works best for each person.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
We had a student come into the center who was really behind in math and needed to work on many fundamental skills. They were also quite shy their first few days, so I made sure the center was a fun place where they could be themself. Now, after working with them for a few months, they have mastered many of the fundamental skills they need to succeed in math, and have come out of their shell a lot!
How do you make learning math fun for students?
It’s important to me that I start off every session with a short conversation about how the student’s week is going and what they’re doing outside of school. Learning about each student's interests outside of school helps me build a relationship with them. Then, if a student gets bored or frustrated during their session, I have a few conversation topics to bring up, so they can take a short break and talk about their interests before being redirected back to their work.

What do you like most about learning?
I like challenging myself to learn skills or topics that are difficult for me. It takes a lot of hard work to master them, but the reward is so worth it in the end.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
One time, when I was helping a student who was struggling with coin equivalence, the strategy I usually teach was still confusing to them. I came up with a new strategy that built on their knowledge of multiplication and division and they improved a lot!
What type of math do you enjoy teaching most?
I like teaching any level of algebra.
How do you make learning math fun for students?
I try to be as encouraging as possible. I think a huge part of becoming proficient in challenging math topics is just believing that you are capable.
