David was born in Pennsylvania, but has lived most of his life in Texas. He went to Midway High School in Waco and graduated from Baylor University with a B.A. in Biology. His hobbies include engaging in theological and artistic discourse, collecting unique pens, writing fiction, and entertaining kids! Favorite Number: 12, for Theological reasons.
Favorite Math Joke: After a sheepdog chased all the sheep into the pen, he told the farmer “All 40 accounted for.” "But I only have 36 sheep,” the farmer replied. “I know,” said the sheepdog. “But I rounded them up.”
I love Mathnasium because: I've never experienced anything more rewarding than instilling mathematical confidence in kids of all ages, and watching them go out into the world unafraid of the challenges math can present.
Jennifer Speer
Owner
Jennifer has a unique perspective that allows her to understand your kids and help them.
She is a successful business owner and homeschooling mom of 3! She has the perspective of an educator as well as a busy parent and knows the challenges of both. Jennifer knows how to engage the kids and hold their interest. She keeps them progressing in math in a way they will actually enjoy!
Jennifer has always had a strong grip on Mathematics, earning her B.B.A in Finance at Southwest Texas State University and then owning and operating successful businesses alongside her husband James.
After discovering Mathnasium and seeing what it can offer kids, they made a tough decision to sell their previous business and start all over again. As scary as that sounds, they knew that parents wanted the best education options available for their children. Now she and James have expanded to multiple locations and have thousands of amazing success stories as a result of the passionate instructors, inspiring learning environment, unique teaching style, and world-class curriculum at Mathnasium!
Favorite Math Joke: There are 3 kinds of people in this world... Those who can count, and those who can't.
Fun Fact: Graduated college in 3 1/2 years with a 4.0!
I love Mathnasium because: I get to be a part of a great organization that changes kids' lives! Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?!?
Larry Martinek
Creator of the Mathnasium Method
Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner city public schools, to acclaimed magnet schools, to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as both a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting students' ability to “do” math, thereby increasing students' math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium’s educational program – one of the most comprehensive and innovative curricula ever produced for teaching math. While Larry is not an Instructor at our Center, he is a valuable asset we can call on to ask about specific students' scenarios for guidance and advice. This has helped to make visits more productive and enjoyable for many of our students.
Kassidy Robinson
Lead Instructor
Kassidy is currently a Sophomore at Baylor and loves learning! She enjoys being outside with her dogs, hiking, hammocking, or picnicking when the weather is nice (which... in Texas... that's rare LOL). Learning has always been a passion of hers and she loves to read, cook, or bake new things in her free time. Kassidy is now in her third year with Mathnasium and hopes for a couple more!
Favorite number: 12, it contains the first and second best numbers!
Favorite math joke: What are ten things you can always count on? Your Fingers!
In five years, I will be: Finishing up my undergrad degree in biology or biochem, taking the MCAT, and applying to med schools to become a trauma or cardiovascular surgeon!
I love Mathnasium because: They help students who may be struggling and encourage them to grow in their math skills and confidence. They are helping everyone learn to love and appreciate math!
Miriam Carl
Instructor
Miriam has lived in Waco her whole life, and is about to begin her junior year of high school at Live Oak. She has 5 younger siblings and loves spending time with her wild family. She plays basketball for her school, and runs cross country and track. Most days she can be found reading, binge watching Netflix, or shamelessly blasting Taylor Swift.
Favorite number: 3, because I would consistently be the third kid in line alphabetically at school. I also love the Rule of Thirds, which essentially says that images are more pleasing when the main focus falls on a third of the canvas.
Favorite math joke: What did the acorn say when it grew up? Geometry! (Gee, I’m a tree!)
In five years, I will be: Hopefully I will be in my last year of college, preparing for graduation and applying to medical schools!
I love Mathnasium because: Math is so so important and helping kids understand it is one of the most fulfilling things you can do. Mathnasium offers a unique and effective perspective on teaching math, while consistently putting the kids first.
Rachel Davenport
Instructor
Rachel is currently attending Midway High School as a Junior. She has plans to major in finance and economics in the future. She runs Cross Country and Track, and is a member of her school’s Student Council, Art club and Medical club. She loves spending time with her two bunnies and betta fish, as well as running and drawing.
Favorite number: 5. Because it’s the most even odd number there is, and there’s five people in my family (including myself!)
Favorite math joke: Student 1: I saw my math teacher with a piece of graph paper yesterday. Student 2: She must be plotting something.
In five years, I will be: At university, getting a masters in business and finance.
I love Mathnasium because: It’s a great way to help students learn how to do math. I help a lot of my friends with figuring out math problems, and I love the moment when people realize that they know the answer and gain confidence in themselves.
Kivan Andreas
Instructor
Kivan is a senior at Vanguard College Preparatory School and attends classes at MCC with extra time, and hopes to continue pursuing higher levels of math. He is very passionate about computer engineering and programming, and has taught himself Python in his free time. Kivan likes making animations in Desmos, and enjoys spending time with all 5 of his pets.
Favorite number: 2, because binary is awesome!
Favorite math joke: Why do mathematicians get Halloween and Christmas confused? Because Oct 31 = Dec 25.
In five years, I will be: In college, pursuing higher levels of mathematics and computer science.
I love Mathnasium because: It is a safe and friendly environment where I can share my love for the beauty of math to so many new people, and help others see the complex and wonderful patterns that we have uncovered!
