Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

Sr. Lead Instructor
When Brendan was a student at Windward Community College, he was a college math tutor for courses such as foundational mathematics up to trigonometry, including the level 100 classes and calculus. As a 2009 graduate of Damien Memorial School, he spent all his high school years on the math team, competing in the Oahu Math League, and took AP Calculus in his junior year. He enjoys spending his free time playing video games, eating, and occasionally walking around town. “I may be odd, but I still can count even numbers.” .

Dr. Gretel Ph.D. Mathematics

Sr. Lead Instructor
Dr. Gretel Sia was one of the two original tutors of Mathnasium Learning Center when it first opened in Hawaii in 2004 at another location. At that time, she was a graduate student of math at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her experience teaching mathematics spans more than thirty (30) years. Over this period, she has taught a wide range of courses including College Algebra, Statistics, Precalculus, Calculus, and Applied Calculus. She earned her Master of Science in Teaching Mathematics degree from Ateneo de Manila University in October 1991, and her Ph.D. in Mathematics degree from University of Hawaii at Manoa in May 2015. She also has a background in law having practiced law in the Philippines for three (3) years and having earned her Master of Laws degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law at University of Hawaii at Manoa in May 2004. She is interested in student success and the conceptual approach of teaching mathematics.

Freddy is a recent graduate of the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education — Music (Instrumental). It is important to Freddy to help students develop a growth mindset where their learning is focused on the process rather than the product. He believes that students are often too focused on their grades rather than engaging with concepts, developing skills, and employing strategies, which are principles of learning and improving. He enjoys working with and learning from students of all age groups and is eager to continue his growth as a mathematician as well. Freddy is an accredited teacher with the Hawaii DOE and is the Music Director at Kailua Intermediate School. Outside of teaching, Freddy enjoys working out, following Major League Baseball, and hanging out with friends!

Fred Schulz

Center Director / Owner
Fred has always had a Love for Math. He was a Math Major and Computer Science Minor while attending Central Michigan University. He spent 25 Years in the IT field before coming to Mathnasium. In Fred's own words, "After my Lovely wife and two Children, Mathnasium is the best thing that ever came my way in life. Our goal is to deliver the best product possible and the reviews show that we are doing just that. My favorite thing is seeing the smile on a students face when the light bulb comes on. It is a signal that they really understand the concept being presented. I also want to state the the main reason we have been successful is all due to the people above this bio, as well as the past employees of Mathnasium of Waialae. Without our great team of instructors and Larry's Mathnasium Method there would be no greatness at Mathnasium of Waialae.

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

What I love about Mathnasium is the ability to teach problem-solving skills and make math make sense, while also making a student smile.
