Summer Camp started this week with three awesome activities! First, students started by creating their very own books – from scratch! With the help of our expert, Alex, who was introduced to book binding in college, students bound their books using their precise measurement skills. Then, our next expert Alexis had students use candy to better understand the concept of camouflage, hunting for M&Ms in a sea of Skittles. Finally, students worked with Alexis again, this time to create Pantographs, an awesome art machine! We worked together to duplicate our art exactly with utmost precision! Stay tuned for next week where we will meet a geneticist, build rockets, and play Mathnasium Games!
This week's experts are Alex and Alexis!
Alex is a hobbyist book binder, first introduced to bookbinding through a college class visit to the library. After college, Alex was reintroduced when he wanted to print tabletop gaming PDFs. Falling into the rabbithole surrounding book binding, Alex decided to give it a try. While book binding, Alex put a lot of math skills to use such as creating algebraic equations to equal space his holes, and using division to create signatures with the right page count. For those interested in book binding, Alex suggests just jumping in and trying it out! Make a small journal or notebook for school, take your time, and measure twice!
This is Alexis' third summer at Mathnasium. Over the last two summers she had the privilege of leading multiple STEAM activities with students such as stomp rockets, coding lego robots, and penny boats! Every year brings new activities and memories and she can’t wait to see what this summer holds. She is heading into her senior year at James Madison University studying Communication Sciences and Disorders with hopes of becoming a speech pathologist. She enjoy hobbies such as hiking, traveling, and any sort of arts and crafts. She feels so blessed to be able to work again this summer and is very excited for it to start!
