Lower Elementary:
Question: Start with 1, add 15, subtract 11, double it, add 1, multiply by 5, subtract 30, take away half. What's the new number?
Answer: 12 1/2
Solution: After we add 15 to 1, we have 16. Then we subtract 11, so we have 16-11=5. After we double it, we have 5x2=10, one more makes 11. Next, we have 11x5, which makes 55. Thirty less than 55 is 25. Since 25 is odd, we can find half of it by finding half of 24 and half of 1. Half of 24 is 12, and half of 1 is 1/2, so that gives us a final answer of 12 1/2.
