Instructor Highlight: Vincent Nguyen

Dec 11, 2020 | West Grove

We hope you enjoyed getting to meet Quan last time on our Instructor Highlights. Next up is Vincent! Whenever Vincent is teaching online or in person, he always also ensures that your students are getting the math tutoring they need in a friendly way.

Q: Hey Vincent, hope you are doing well. Currently, what school do you attend?

I currently am a freshman Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Chemical Engineering. I’m looking to obtain a BS in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Material Engineering in Spring 2024. Looking to do some research and potentially graduate school as well.

Q: Engineering is no easy major. What do you want to do with it?

I’m looking to go into some material engineering at a bigger company like Intel or work with semiconductors, but then from there maybe get into more of the business side of it.

Q: That's awesome! What got you interested in those majors?

I love that everything is made of some type of material so both chemical and material engineering are super applicable! I went on a tour at UCI and heard someone speaking on material engineering and found it super awesome.

Q: And how long have you worked at Mathnasium?

I started working a little bit after Quan started working, so probably since the end of June 2020.

Q: Since you've been working here for around half a year, has working here made you think differently about math education?

While working at Mathnasium, I’ve come to learn that math can be for everyone with the right guidance. It is necessary to help students realize that math is not a formula but a method of thinking.

Q: Definitely agree. Do you have a favorite math concept to teach?
My favorite math concept to teach is trigonometry. In trigonometry, you learn to manipulate various elements of triangles and shapes. To find solutions, it is necessary to be creative and observant.

Q: Trig is tough, so it's great that it's your favorite concept to teach! Let's move onto some personal questions. When not teaching or studying, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

When I have a lot of free time, like during the weekends, I like going out hiking or camping. When I don't have much free time to go out, I'll play some games and talk with friends. I also spend some time looking at stocks and playing around with them.

Q: Those sound like some great hobbies! Do you have any favorite places to hike or camp?

One of my favorite places is Black Star Canyon! It's always great to go right after it rains because then you see the water running.

Q: That's great! We'll have to check it out sometime. Here's something a little more abstract--is there mythical creature you wish actually existed?

It would be incredible if Pokemon existed. I’ve always dreamed of traveling with a Pikachu or a Squirtle by my side. I’d love to have that sort of companionship with a Pokemon.

Q: Yeah, traveling with Pokemon would be awesome! Let's end with a final math question. What do you love/most love about working at Mathnasium?

The best part about working at Mathnasium is being able to interact meaningfully with students. Here, the environment is very comfortable and easy to work in, making it easy to talk to students and connect with them.
