Tim Scifres

Tim Scifres

Owner
Tim is the Owner at Mathnasium of West Lexington. He comes to Mathnasium with 21 years of experience teaching mathematics at the high school level. He brings a passion with him to see kids gain a greater confidence and understanding with math than they ever have realized before. He believes all kids can learn math and the Mathnasium Method will provide strategies and tools for each child that comes into his center to be successful in this program. He has a wife, Jessica, and two daughters, Flora and Lilyana (both current Mathnasium students). Tim and Jessica moved to Lexington a little over 6 years ago and look forward to watching their daughters grow up here. They are also very excited to continue investing in this wonderful community. Go Cats!!

Sandy McVoy

Center Director
Sandy is the Center Director at Mathnasium of West Lexington. Sandy was excited to begin working at Mathnasium because it allows her to challenge herself and help students gain confidence by becoming Masters of Math! Sandy brings with her experience in real estate, running Head Start Centers, teaching at the Salvation Army, among other things. Mathnasium is fortunate to have such a passionate and hard working Center Director. Sandy has been married for 23 years and has 2 children. Her daughter, a figure skater, is a Senior at Adrian College in Michigan. Her son is a Freshman at BCTC and plays Hockey for the Northern Cyclones in New Hampshire. Sandy loves to cook and try new foods.

Maggie A.

Instructor
Maggie is a senior at UK studying Biochemistry and Psychology. She's always loved math and strives to teach a similar appreciation to students. When she's not teaching at Mathnasium, you'll find her working at UK's Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center studying traumatic brain injury, crocheting, or playing with her cats, Sid and Shadow.

Jessica Scifres

Assistant Center Director
Jess plays an integral role in keeping our Mathnasium center running smoothly. She handles binders, keeps things organized, and prepares the instructors for a successful day of tutoring. She's seen the effects of Mathnasium from the inside and out, in an administrative position and as a mother of two students here. She loves helping kids grow and learn the importance of math and the skills needed for it.

Rachel W.

Instructor
Rachel is currently a teacher with Fayette County Public Schools. Mathnasium interested her as a way to help prepare her for being in a math classroom. She's a very caring teacher who tends to the needs of individuals, rather than just teaching to a class. She does a wonderful job of getting to know each and every student she interacts with.

Elizabeth N.

Instructor
Elizabeth is a sophomore at the University of Kentucky studying Russian & International Economics. She hopes to work for the CIA in the future as a Russian interpreter. Elizabeth was a student here at Mathnasium during her high school years when she needed help with her calculus class. Since then, she has come back to work here as an instructor to pass on her love of math and to help give kids the confidence to succeed in math. When she is not working at Mathnasium, you can find Elizabeth singing, studying Russian, watching horror movies or snuggled up with her dog Radar.

Cody B.

Instructor
Cody is a Junior at UK studying Aerospace Engineering and is hoping to work for NASA. He's always loved math and hopes to create the same drive in other students. He started at Mathnasium as a student and loves to snow ski and hang out with friends.

Anson W.

Instructor
Anson is a Junior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. He enjoys teaching as it helps reinforce concepts for his own studies as well. When he's not tutoring he can be found playing video games and avoiding tap water like the plague.

Rohan D.

Instructor
Rohan is a sophomore pre-med student at UK. When he was young, Rohan was in a similar program to Mathnasium, and hopes to help facilitate the same enjoyable environment that he experienced as a young student. When he's not tutoring, Rohan enjoys playing tennis, and trying out new restaurants.

Fred H.

Instructor
Fred is seeking a degree in music at the University of Kentucky during his retirement. He's a passionate, encouraging tutor who has always loved math. His goal with Mathnasium is to share that love for math with youngsters who have yet to discover it. When he's not helping students learn, he's playing tenor sax or electric bass with bands around town (including the March Madness Marching Band)!

Mary R.

Instructor
Mary is a junior at Lafayette who just so happens to be ambidextrous. Similarly, she tries to be very flexible with students, encouraging their learning in a subject that can be a struggle. Her biggest piece of advice is to never argue with a 90° angle, as it'll always be right.

Arushi B.

Instructor
Arushi is a senior at Sayre. She plans to go pre-med to become a physician, as she loves helping people grow. She loves the learning environment at Mathnasium, and hopes to help every student learn enough to understand this joke she once heard. It goes, "there are three types of people in the world. Those who can count and those who can't!"

Pranav K.

Instructor
Pranav is a junior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. He's a motivated, talented instructor who enjoys math. He wants to pursue a career in mathematics, solving real-world problems. He likes that Mathnasium allows students to learn math at an accelerated pace, and tries to help them get ahead where he can.

Emerson M.

Instructor
Emerson is a senior at Bryan Station High School with a passion for math. She hopes to go into aerospace engineering, which aligns with her hobby of engineering and assembling jewelry. She was once a student at Mathnasium and enjoyed how it made learning fun. As an instructor, she hopes to pass that on and make learning fun for the students that she helps.

Michelle M.

Assistant Center Director
Michelle is our Assistant Center Director! She is also an FCPS teacher who has worked with a variety of grade levels. She has two sons and three cats. She's worked in the realm of psychology, which has led to a teaching philosophy that revolves around instilling confidence in students. She finds it very important that students not only learn fundamental math skills, but feel comfortable going wrong and recovering from their mistakes.

Ayaan A.

Instructor
Ayaan is a Junior at Dunbar High School. He is in the MSTC program and is planning to go into pre-medicine in hopes of becoming a doctor. He has two sisters. Ayaan shows a great attitude to help students progress in math and gain math skills at Mathnasium.

Elena (Leo) D.

Instructor
Elena (aka Leo) is a Freshman at the University of Kentucky. She has two sisters and a dog and cat. Elena's hard work ethic and enthusiasm show, as she strives to help kids learn to love aspects of math and overcome their fear of math. She hopes to become a teacher or Mathematician.

Christopher (Chris) G.

Instructor
Chris is a freshman at UK, studying computer science. He has always enjoyed math and can play the saxophone and is a self proclaimed Connect-4 champion. He would like to have a job in software development when he graduates from college. Chris has a passion to help children enjoy and understand math better.

Andrew R.

Instructor
Andrew loves teaching math. He has a Bachelor in Business Administration and a Master of Arts in teaching. His career goal is to become a high school math teacher.

Mazie C.

Instructor
Mazie was a former student at Mathnasium. She loved Mathnasium as a student, and exceled under the excellent care of our instructors. Her goal is to help instill the same confidence in math in other students, like Mathnasium did for her. Mazie is currently a student at the University of Cincinnati. Mazie hopes to become a Psychiatrist someday.

Jack B.

Instructor
Jack enjoys teaching math, and has an aptitude for working with children. He goes to Highschool in Jessamine County. He lives with his parents, his younger brother, and their two cats. He enjoys martial arts, and has competed nationally.

Gracie F.

Instructor
Gracie is a junior at the University of Kentucky studying Civil Engineering with hopes to get into urban planning when she graduates. She has always had an interest in math, and helping students learn to enjoy math at Mathnasium has inspired her to pursue a math minor. Other than tutoring math, Gracie enjoys reading, crocheting, and doing anything outdoors!
