Grouping Math Prompts!

Jun 15, 2021 | Yukon

Over the years, we've learned about the benefits of reading stories with your children at a young age.  But are you "mathing" at home with your children?  Instead of constantly redoing homework or keeping their head in a math book, a great way to make math a consistent and fun part of your child's life is by using math prompts.

Check out some of our grouping math prompts! (Click here to learn more about the importance of grouping)

Math Prompt #1: Finding Groups

Grouping with visuals can start at any age.  Whether it is by counting out the individual groups or by noticing a pattern.  This prompt can also be done with items around the house, such as coins, pens, or beads.

Math Prompt #2: Balancing Act

Since there are multiple "right answers", working through this prompt shows children that sometimes there's more than one way to solve a problem.

Math Prompt #3: Counting Change

This prompt helps reinforce counting by 1s, 5s, 10s, 25s, etc for younger children and multiplication for older.  Another method is grouping the circles to make one dollar.  If each circle is a dime and there are 10 dimes in a dollar, 10 circles would amount to one dollar.  Children love counting change!  If you have real coins, you can use coins for this prompt.

Math Prompt #4: Grouping Numbers

This prompt is great for seeing how numbers can be grouped.  For younger children, focus on identifying pairs that add up to 10.  Make it more challenging for older children by finding sets of 3 or 4 numbers that make 10!  Once they master finding multiple ways to get to 10, they can attempt to find groups that make 20.
