What is a Constant?

A quantity that does not change in value. A number, term, quantity, or mathematical object that is assumed to be fixed within the given context.

A constant is a number that always stays the same. In math, constants are the opposite of variables. While variables like x or y can change or take on different values, a constant never changes—it's fixed.

Here’s a simple example: In the expression x + 5, the 5 is a constant. No matter what value x has, the 5 stays the same.

You’ll see constants everywhere—from basic arithmetic to algebra, geometry, and even calculus.

You might also hear the term constant used to describe special numbers like:

  • π (pi) ≈ 3.14, which is always the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter
  • e ≈ 2.718, which appears often in exponential growth and calculus

Constants are used in real life too:

  • A flat fee (like a delivery charge) is a constant in a pricing equation.
  • The speed limit on a road is a constant that doesn’t change as you drive.
  • In science, things like gravity (9.8 m/s² on Earth) are considered constants.

When Do Students Learn About Constants?

Students start working with constants when they begin learning about algebraic expressions, usually around upper elementary school. As their math skills grow, they learn to recognize and use constants in more advanced equations and functions.

Grades 4–5 – Early Introduction

Students begin seeing constants in expressions and word problems, especially when they work with variables. For example: “x + 3 = 7.”

Grades 6–8 – Pre-Algebra and Algebra

Students work with constants in equations and functions. They learn how constants behave differently from variables and how to identify them in expressions like 2x + 4.

Grades 9+ – Advanced Algebra and Beyond

Students explore constants in more complex functions and learn how constants like π and e are used in geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
