What is Geometry?

The branch of mathematics that studies shapes, sizes, positions, and how objects relate to each other in space.

Geometry is the part of math that deals with shapes and how we describe the space around us. It helps us understand the size, position, and structure of things we see and use every day—like buildings, roads, and even patterns in nature.

In geometry, we study things like:

  • Lines and angles
  • Triangles, squares, and other polygons
  • Circles
  • 3D shapes like cubes, spheres, and cylinders

We also learn how to measure:

  • Lengths (How long is a side?)
  • Angles (How much space there is between two sides)
  • Area and perimeter (How much space something covers or the distance around a shape/figure)
  • Volume (How much space something holds)

Here are some geometry fun facts from Mathnasium:

  • Every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square.
  • The angles of any triangle always add up to 180°.
  • A straight line is made of two right angles, and a full circle is four right angles.
  • There’s no such thing as a “left angle”!

Geometry is more than shapes on paper—it’s how we understand design, motion, space, and how different parts fit together.

When Do Students Learn About Geometry?

Students begin learning geometry in early elementary grades by exploring shapes and spatial awareness. As they grow, they learn to measure, analyze, and solve geometry problems with increasing complexity.

Grades K–2 – Introduction to Shapes and Space

Students learn to name basic shapes, identify their features, and describe where things are (e.g., above, below, next to).

Grades 3–5 – Building Geometry Skills

Students begin measuring angles, calculating perimeter and area, and classifying different types of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Grades 6+ – Advanced Geometry

Students explore coordinate planes, transformations, proofs, and formulas for volume and surface area. They also begin formal geometry classes in middle and high school.
