How did you hear about us?

Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

Jessica Ludwig, Center Director

Jessica has always had a passion for teaching, and especially for teaching math. She graduated from James Madison University with her Masters in Elementary Education and a concentration in math. She taught 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades before joining our team here. She is excited to use her skills to help the students of Mathnasium grow in their math education!

Matthew Muncy, Assistant Center Director

Matthew is a native to Richmond and studied Political Science at Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to starting at Mathnasium you may have seen him working at Gelati Celesti in Short Pump. Matthew was drawn to us because he loves to see people learn and grow! When not working, Matthew can be found watching soccer, cooking and reading. He particularly loves to read Stephen King, military history, and anything related to politics! Matthew was also in the Marines and has been to 36 countries on 4 continents!

Zach Droppa, Lead Instructor

Zach grew up in Purcellville, VA and studied math at West Virginia University and University of Maryland. Teaching is his passion so he fits right in at Mathnasium! Zach also enjoys playing tabletop role-playing games with his friends (his favorite game is Twilight Imperium), and he loves his cat, Mayer!

Jim Burns, District Manager

Jim grew up in Elmsford, New York and went to the University of Dayton where he studied Business and Marketing. We’re excited to take advantage of his experience coaching, mentoring, and developing front line leaders to enhance our own team! Jim was drawn to Mathnasium by our ability to enrich and positively impact kids. When not working, Jim enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with his family and following his life long favorite baseball team, the NY Yankees.

Nicki Atwood, Director of Operations

Nicki hails from Baltimore and studied Physics and Chemistry at University of Richmond. While working with students in college, she noticed that many times students are held back because of a gap in their educational foundation and that drew her to Mathnasium’s unique approach. When not at Mathnasium, Nicki loves to visit different cities and hang out with her cat. In fact, she loves pets of all shapes and sizes, and has had many different types of pets, including a dog, a mouse, a rabbit, and even a hedgehog!

OwnerJames Temple, Owner

James developed a passion for and proficiency with Mathematics during his middle and high school years. In 2000, James graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Mathematics and a love for solving all types of problems. He took those skills into the United States Air Force where he served for 7 years as an aircraft maintenance officer. It was during these years that James had the opportunity to tutor home schooled children and really started to appreciate the frustration that many kids feel towards Mathematics. James left the Air Force in 2007 to go back to the University of Virginia where he received his Master's of Business Administration degree from the Darden School of Business.

OwnerJoAnn Temple, Owner

JoAnn became interested in the education of children while raising her four sons and assisting them with their homework. She obtained a degree in early childhood education while simultaneously working at an early intervention and rehab facility, which served children with special needs. There she was given many opportunities in varying positions within the agency. During this time she gained valuable knowledge and experience focusing on the development of young children. In more recent years she worked in an early childhood special education program and was also a substitute teacher in the public school system. Through these experiences she gained first hand knowledge of how frustrating it can be for teachers to try to meet the needs of all their students with limited resources and other constraints. Mathnasium represents an opportunity for James and JoAnn, as a mother and son team, to combine their complimentary experiences, education and fundamental values to help children of all skill levels realize their full potential in Mathematics and beyond.
