Joshua Edgar, Center Director
Josh is the Center Director at Mathnasium of Tuscaloosa. Prior to opening his Mathnasium center, Josh worked at Microsoft providing hardware and software solutions to private schools and businesses in New Jersey. He is a graduate of Marion Military Institute and is a Tuscaloosa native. Josh has a passion for community involvment and he spends his time in and out of work helping make a difference in the lives of those around him. Josh is enthusiastic about helping every child in the Tuscaloosa community to truly understand math by teaching it in the way that makes sense to them. He has taught and tutored children of all ages, and he is committed to bringing the Mathnasium Method to the children in the community.
Genelle Pernia, MD, Owner and Instructor
Genelle is the owner of Mathnasium of Tuscaloosa. In addition to being a dedicated owner and instructor at the center, she also doubles as an emergency room physician at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS. Genelle's journey with Mathnasium began when she was looking for a way to enrich her son's math learning and found that nothing in Tuscaloosa quite fit the options for which she was looking. She decided to open her own Mathnasium franchise to help her son and other children in Tuscaloosa to realize their full potential. Genelle believes that a good education allows students to achieve their maximum potential in life, and since Mathnasium allows for kids to learn math in a unique and fun way, it’s a perfect match!
Austin Kohls, Instructor
Austin is a student at the University of Alabama pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in Psychology. Before moving to Tuscaloosa to attend UA, Austin was an instructor for 2 years at the Mathnasium of Chattanooga, TN. He enjoys watching and playing sports; his favorite being Football and Basketball. Madison Brand, Instructor
Madison graduated from Auburn University in Spring 2017 with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education, and she is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics-TESOL at the University of Alabama. She tutors in the areas of both mathematics and ESL. Madison previously worked at the Montgomery location of Mathnasium, and she is excited to join the team here in Tuscaloosa. Besides teaching math, she is also interested in foreign languages. She has studied Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish, and she is conversationally fluent in Korean.
Mallory Brown, Instructor
Mallory is a Tuscaloosa native and a recent graduate of Brookwood HS. While she was attending HS, Mallory was simultaneously attending the University of Alabama where she is now a sophomore pursing her bachelor’s degree in Pure Mathematics. Before working at Mathnasium, Mallory previously tutored her fellow peers and younger students through the LEAP Education Program. Mallory is our youngest instructor and she enjoys missing every pop culture reference that the rest of the team makes.
Ben moved to Tuscaloosa from Birmingham, AL to pursue his degree in Aerospace Engineering at The University of Alabama. Ben is considering teaching in the future and is exploring his love of working with kids at Mathnasium. He plans on going to Morocco to volunteer teaching English next summer. Ben's signature will be priceless one day after he saves the world, so don't hesitate to ask him to sign anything. Ben is the newest addition to our team at Mathnasium and we're glad to have him. Mileena Whited, Instructor
Mileena is a Senior in the Honors College at the University of Alabama. She’s double majoring in Psychology and Statistical Mathematics with the intention of pursuing her graduate degree in Psychology. She has previously mentored local high school students, helping them with subjects up to AP Calculus. After school, Mileena intends to do research on the cognitive learning processes involved in learning Math.
