Rae Jiang

Rae Jiang

Center Director
Passionate! Rae is passionate about two things, Math and teaching kids math! With a very analytical mind and a love for math, Rae easily got into UC Berkeley as a Math major. She was able to maintain an A average at the same time tutoring many athletes. After graduating with a BS degree in Applied Mathematics and having tutored kids and college students, Rae applied for a tutoring position at Mathnasium and soon discovered the rewarding experience and the joy of teaching kids math. She loves to see the glow in their eyes when the students “get it” for the first time. Students love her direct approach as well as the unique Mathnasium method that makes learning math fun. With her joy in teaching kids, she was promoted to be the Center Director at one of the fastest growing and best run centers in Southern California through her hard work and dedication to results. While she tutored kids, she also started teaching and training instructors to follow the Mathnasium method. Now she is bringing her love, her expertise and her passion for Math to the students to her own community in West Covina. She believes good grades do not belong only to the Elites but to everyone who is willing to learn. Parents will love her ethics, and students will quickly catch her contagious love for math. The Mathnasium method is well-known for its high rate of success, and her passion is yours to share. In her spare time, she loves gardening and enjoys nature.

Sanyri

Lead Instructor
Sanyri graduated from UC San Diego with a Major in Physics and a minor in Mathematics. Physics has led her to have a greater appreciation for how math is applied and why it’s fundamental to many fields. For as long as she can remember, math was San’s favorite subject. This was until she reached Calculus in high school and found her idea of math changed, suddenly the new concepts didn’t seem to fit together. Despite this, she sought to understand it even when it was challenging and helped her peers whenever asked. She could see the impact some teachers had in how they communicated and they inspired her to be enthusiastic about teaching and understanding a subject that can be challenging. Her goal now is to become a better teacher and to instill a greater appreciation for math in herself and others. Overall, the spirit of helping others understand more “complicated” or “difficult” subjects stayed with San throughout college, as she learned to navigate time-consuming and often frustrating exercises. Her goal is to help people develop a mindset to approach even the most daunting problems. San’s interests include baking, skating, playing music, and reading. San likes being creative and studying independently now that she’s out of school.

Nicole

Instructor
Nicole has always loved math when she was young. When she was in elementary school in the Philippines, she participated in math competitions and even got 2nd place in the National Math Quiz Bee when she was in the 6th grade. She loved the feeling of accomplishment when she was able to solve a hard math problem. When she moved back here in the States, she would still be in contact with her friends in the Philippines and they would ask her for help in their math and Physics homework. Nicole found a similar sense of accomplishment in helping others solve Math problems as she had when she was solving them herself. At Mathnasium, she wants to help students be able to feel that sense of accomplishment at solving a math problem. She believes that there is no math problem that is too hard to solve, as long as you understand the problem. Other than math, she also likes singing, playing video games and writing stories. She was in her school choir in high school and one of her lifelong dreams was to have one of her stories published.

Joshua

Instructor
Joshua graduated with a mathematics degree from California State University, Northridge. He is always interested in the types of mathematical problems and how they are solved. Joshua likes to work with many methods from using computational techniques to a critical thinking approach to a proof based procedure. He is also passionate about the applications of math used in programming and data science. Some of his favorites include algorithm design, machine learning, and designing game levels. Outside of tutoring, he enjoys using mathematical principles to program physics based games and database applications.

Kathryn

Instructor
Kathryn graduated with a double major in Mathematics and Honors Humanities from Azusa Pacific University. She has a great love for math and an even greater love for teaching and inspiring students. She tutored her peers throughout high school and college and was previously employed by the Azusa Pacific University Tutoring Center. Her favorite part of tutoring is watching a student experience the “aha!” moment when they first begin to understand a new and difficult concept. She also enjoys getting to know the students she works with and finding out how best to help them learn in their unique ways. During her time at Azusa Pacific, Kathryn also discovered her passion for mathematics research while working on a research problem in Combinatorial Game Theory. She hopes to continue her research in Combinatorics or in another pure mathematics field in graduate school, and to eventually work as a mathematics professor.

Vincent

Instructor
Vincent is majoring in Mathematics with emphasis on Secondary Education at Azusa Pacific University, he is eager to teach and share his passion for mathematics to everyone who needs to either catch-up or excel in math. Mathematics was not his passion at first, however, that changed when he took his first Calculus class in college. He loved the challenge and upon the encouragement of his professor, he majored in mathematics. While math classes are indeed difficult, the teaching style of his professors with emphasis on encouragement and hard work, made him decide to be a math teacher himself in future. At Mathnasium, he wants to promote the same teaching style of his caring professors and become another educator who has passion in teaching.

Noah

Instructor
Ever since Noah was a boy, he has always loved math. Math can be fun, it is like solving a puzzle, and it is his passion to help students find the joy of learning math. He believes that math is not something that only a select few can master but is something that everyone can learn and love. However, math can be challenging, so it is his mission as a math instructor to guide students through their challenges. Nothing warms his heart more than to see a student overcome a difficulty in their studies. Additionally, he has received special recognition in many of his math courses and wishes to pass his work ethic on to others. He aspires to be a Mechanical Engineer at NASA after university, and design automated systems for space exploration. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, running, and nature.

Larry Martinek

Chief Instructional Officer / Developer of Mathnasium Program
Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner city public schools, to acclaimed magnet schools, to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as both a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting students' ability to “do” math, thereby increasing students' math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium’s educational program – one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculas ever produced for teaching math. While Larry is not an Instructor at our Center, he is a valuable asset we can call on to ask about specific students' scenarios for guidance and advice. This has helped to make visits more productive and enjoyable for many of our students.
