Brent Pierson, Owner/Center Director

Brent graduated from UCLA with a degree in sociology and spent the next 25 years working as a documentary and non-fiction TV producer, director and writer. He was inspired to open a Mathnasium learning center by memories of his own struggles with math in middle school and high school. He knows firsthand the frustration of not “getting it” and recognizes how giving up on math can limit a person’s academic and career choices later on. Brent moved to Eagle Rock in 1998 and has witnessed the incredible transformation of the community over the years. He’s excited to bring Mathnasium to the neighborhood and to provide a fun and supportive place for students to discover and develop their math skills. Brent is very proud of his team of friendly and caring instructors, each of whom is dedicated to improving your child's math competence and self-confidence.

Jillian Pierson, Ph.D, Owner/Co-Center Director

For nearly 20 years, Jillian has been a lecturer at USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism where she earned her master’s and doctorate degrees. Her BA in psychology is from the University of California Berkeley, but sometimes it seems her real education only began with the birth of Brent and Jillian’s two daughters, who now attend Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School. Jillian brings her perspectives as both a parent and an educator to Mathnasium, where she is pleased to give kids an opportunity to learn math in a way that makes sense to them.

Cathy Vazquez, Lead Instructor

Cathy graduated from the University of California San Diego with a degree in biology. In addition to being the lead instructor here at Mathnasium of Eagle Rock, Cathy tutors students in the statistics lab at Pasadena City College and volunteers as a tutor for an elementary school literacy program. She has a true passion for teaching and will be pursuing a master’s degree and teaching credential in the next year. Born and raised in the Eagle Rock/Glassell Park area, Cathy loves jogging, hiking, cooking and spending quality time with her family.

Casey Shatraw, Instructor

Casey is home for the summer from Emerson College in Boston where he's majoring in media arts production. His goal is to be a film and television editor. Casey says he loves the objectivity of math -- there is only one right answer. He believes math can teach us how to interact with the world around us, and that instructing students is more than just "showing" them. It's about really involving them in the process.

Chelle Cruz, Instructor

Chelle is a computer science major at California State University Los Angeles. His career goal is to become a computer programmer and design innovative apps, games and websites. A natural mathematician, Chelle has always seen numbers as a way of making sense of the world. He grew up helping his siblings and classmates with their math homework and genuinely enjoys sharing his lifelong love of math with others. Chelle has an artistic side and counts drawing, photography and filmmaking among his many hobbies.

Chris Kamerin, Instructor

Chris is a senior mathematics major at Occidental College and plans on becoming an actuary after graduation. He comes from a family of teachers and loves working with students on a subject that he really enjoys. Chris has put his love of math to good use by designing audio speakers, which started out as a hobby and has grown into a nice side business. A longtime athlete, Chris is always looking for a good pick-up basketball game.

Hayk Mirozyan, Instructor

Hayk graduated from Glendale High School and is now studying biology at UCLA. He plans on being a doctor.
