My Middle Schooler Gets Good Grades in Math But Something is Wrong

Mar 5, 2017 | Littleton

Parents of middle schoolers may wonder why their child earns A’s, B’s and occasional C’s in math, but then say “I hate math.”  What is going on?  Usually this child is missing a critical math skill but have learned to work around that missing skill. At Mathnasium of Littleton we call these missing skills “math gaps.”

A math learning gap can happen for any number of reasons including missing school or not having great instruction. Middle schoolers have often figured out ways to compensate for their math learning gaps, some of which may have occurred as early as second grade. Work around tactics can include using calculators, memorizing shortcuts, or doing extra credit assignments to bring up poor grades. But even if a child is getting good grades, a math gap is like a broken tool. It slows down children’s speed and accuracy and wears away at their confidence and enthusiasm to learn more advanced math.
