Ferdinand Desir II

(The Director)

Ferdinand is the Center Director at Mathnasium of Riverview, FL.  Prior to opening his Mathnasium center, Ferdinand was an engineer serving in the USAF, and worked as a civil and mechanical engineer in construction.  As such, his responsibilities were to build, maintain, and repair USAF infrastructure in the states and abroad.  His largest construction portfolio consisted of over 40 projects worth a combined $450 million.

He was also a teacher and  mentor as the Director of Operations at the Department of Defense' Louis F. Garland Firefighter Academy in San Angelo, TX.  As the Director he was fortunate to work with firefighter instructors and trainees from all five military services: Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, and the Coast Guard along with Defense civilian agencies.

Ferdinand also volunteered to become a summer engineering camp mentor at the Navy's Port Hueneme in California, in conjunction with the Navy SEABEES and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).

Ferdinand was also selected to teach at the US Military Academy at West Point.  However, due to the needs of the USAF, he was not allowed a curtailment of an overseas assignment in South Korea.

Later in his career he was assigned to the USAF Air Education and Training Command where he was given charge of executing an Air Force-wide energy awareness and conservation training program in coordination with the Undersecretary of the Air Force Energy Director.

After retiring he wanted to continue service to his country and joined the Troops to Teachers program  After attaining a teaching certificate of eligibility in math, he started as a substitute teacher at the Kid's Community College- Southeast campus teaching K through 4th grade.  The Campus Director was so pleased with his teaching and demeanor with the kids that she hired him as the Director of the after-school program Impact Children For Life (ICFL).

Soon afterwards, it became clear what he wanted to do- teach kids full time and concentrate on math, engineering and sciences.  The idea of the Mathnasium of Riverview was born.

Ferdinand has a way with kids and keeping them focused and curious.  He is very compassionate and wants to see EVERY kid get their fair chance at success through math sense.

He feels that every kid can succeed at math if they are taught in a way that actually makes sense to them as an individual!

And at Mathnasium, we make math make sense.

 His credentials :

- Certified instructor at Mathnasium

- Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering

- Master of Science in environmental engineering

- Math Teaching Certificate of eligibility from Florida Department of Education

- Former elementary school substitute teacher and Director of after-school care program

She admires how all the concepts can connect and apply to each other in ways that increase your understanding. Abby thinks there is an infinite amount of knowledge to be discovered in math, and appreciates that it can be compared to the simplest of concepts. Math is by far her favorite subject, and she plans to continue her studies by becoming an environmental engineer or a math professor.
