Roel Florentino, Owner, M.Ed.

Credentialed High School Math Teacher

Roel is a credentialed high school math teacher, currently in his 15th year of teaching. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree and Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics from BIOLA University. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching Specialization in Educational Technology. Roel has a long history in education. He has over 20 years of combined tutoring and teaching experience. He was an AVID Peer tutor as a high school senior. He continued on for four more years as an AVID College Tutor to students in 9th - 12th grades, tutoring math. Roel's deep passion is playing a role in the academic success of each child in order for them to achieve their goals and dreams. Roel believes that education is the key to success in life. Mathnasium is the avenue in which Roel chose to provide that to young children.

Ondre Rissling, Center Director 

Ondre is attending California State University Fullerton, where he is pursuing his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. He plans to get his teaching credential and Master's degree to become a high school math teacher. Ondre has been a tutor since his sophmore year of high school and loves teaching because of the joy that comes with expanding a student's mind.

In five years, I will be: A credentialed math teacher teaching AP Calculus and owner of my own Mathnasium.

I love Mathnasium because: It is by far the best part of every day, especially watching the students as they overcome obstacles and math finally makes sense. Also, I really love how we teach students to be non-routine problem solvers so they can take their new knowledge and apply it wherever they go.


Ken Logan, Instructor 

Ken is a Mathematics Instructor at the Secondary College and University levels. He has a Bachelor's of Arts and Master's degree in Mathematics, along with over 20 years of experience in teaching at the high school and college levels. Ken specializes in financial mathematics, statistics, calculus and many other applied mathematical topics but he enjoys teaching all levels.

In five years, I will be: teaching at the university level and completing my PHD in financial engineering.

Daniel Ortega, Instructor

Daniel is a Senior at Tesoro High School where he was recently awarded the Torch Award of Excellence Plaque Winner for the entire Mathematics department, as a Junior. He was the top student in AP Calculus BC as a sophomore, and AP Statistics as a junior. His Junior year he finished 2nd place for the highest individual score at the OCC Math Meet and helped the Tesoro's Math Competition Team place 1st. As a senior, Daniel will be taking Analytic Geometry and Calculus at Saddleback College.  Daniel enjoys playing tennis for Tesoro's Boys' Varsity team, speed-solving Rubik's cubes, playing ping pong, and hanging out with his twin sister. Daniel plans on pursuing a college degree in math or science.

Grant Roberts, Instructor 

Grant is a physics student at Saddleback College and hopes to transfer to UCI to continue his undergraduate degree and eventually move on to a PhD in theoretical physics. He is an avid reader and his favorite book is The Man in the High Castle by Phillip K. Dick. His other hobbies include playing video games and learning history.

In five years, I will be: Working on my masters degree in physics, hopefully close to finishing it. 

I love Mathnasium because: Helping kids understand math and its importance, especially in the modern world, as well as gaining critical thinking skills is one of the most important things we can do for our society.


Tyler Diederichsen, Instructor 

Tyler is a computer scientist, musician, and experienced math tutor. He has recently received a Bachelors of Art in computer science from California State University at Fullerton in January 2018. Tyler has tutored for Saddleback College from 2011 to 2014. He has a combined 6 years of total tutoring experience, both in private and group settings. He enjoys helping people learn to enjoy math because it is so important in daily life. His hobbies include: playing guitar in his band, reading novels, and learning foreign languages.

In five years, I will be: working internationally.

Jenny Wang, Instructor 

Jenny is a senior at Trabuco Hills High School with a weighted GPA of 4.96, placing her as rank 4 in her class of over 700 and as the highest ranking girl in her grade. She is currently enrolled in 7 AP classes. She is on the board for Mu Alpha Theta, also known as the National Math Honor Society, at her school, where they teach members different types of math beyond what is taught in school. She is also the president of her school's Mock Trial program, where she won an individual award for Outstanding Attorney. She plans on pursuing an undergraduate degree in math.

In five years, I will be: happy and in graduate school or working. 

I love Mathnasium because: The Mathnasium curriculum is individualized to each student, teaching them tricks and tips to solve problems quickly. I wish I learned some of those tricks earlier. I also love how I can form a real connection with every student, watching them grow and improve over time. 


 AJ Martin, Instructor

AJ recently graduated from Trabuco Hills High School with a combined 4.0 GPA. Math has always been one of his favorite subjects in school, specifically the application of it in classes like AP Physics and ROP Rapid Prototyping. He will be attending Irvine Valley College in the fall to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering and plans to transfer to Northern Arizona University after two years. AJ loves to moutain bike as often as he can and has logged over 1,000 miles in this year alone.

Allyson Trussell, Instructor 

Allyson is currently a Senior at Tesoro High School and enrolled in AP Statistics. She received a perfect score of 36 on the mathematics section of the ACT and has received many academic awards including the Torch of Excellence for chemistry as well as was selected to compete in the American Chemical Society Olympiad Exam. She has 2 years of prior tutoring experience through National Honor Society and is Vice President of Tesoro's Science Olympiad team. Allyson loves helping children to achieve success through faith and dedication towards making their dreams a reality. Her favorite pastimes are Disneyland visits and adventues to new places!

Parth Patel, Instructor 

Parth is currently a junior at Tesoro High School and is taking AP Calculus AB. Parth has completed many courses including AP Computer Science Java and is also enrolled in Honors Physics, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science Principles. Parth has been honored with many awards including the platinum cat award for best student overall at Arroyo Vista Middle School and a torch of excellence for Spanish at Tesoro High School. His favorite hobbies include listening to music, playing the piano, and watching sports.

Kai Smith, Instructor 

Kai is a senior at Trabuco Hills High School with a current weighted GPA of 4.8, placing him in the top 2% of the class. He is currently a full IB diploma student and is looking to attain the IB diploma along with credits from the 10 AP exams he will take by senior year. He is on the board for Mu Alpha Theta, which teaches conceptual math to high schoolers, and is tied for the highest scoring IB physics student in Trabuco history. He plans to pursue a degree in chemistry and will be studying at the  UC Berkeley College of Chemistry next year.

I love Mathnasium because: it allows me to teach math in a focused environment where the student is able to learn at maximum efficiency. 


Matt Polcyn, Instructor 

Matt is an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student at Univeristy of California, Irvine. He recently graduated from Trabucco Hills High School with a weighted 4.5 GPA. His favorite subjects were Calculus and Physics. After tutoring thoughout high school, he could not see a better fit for his first job than Mathnasium. After college he hopes to work in the field of aerospace with a dream job at SpaceX or NASA. His interests include going to the beach and playing video games; even competing in Super Smash Bros tournaments.

In five years, I will be: working to send people and spacecrafts to places never thought to be possible. 

I love Mathnasium because: I think there are major issues in how public education teaches math and Mathnasium does a great job at fixing those issues and keeping kids engaged and entertained in the process. 


Varsha Nair, Instructor 

Varsha is a senior at Trabuco Hills High School with a current weighted GPA of 4.8. She has won numerous academic accolades, including a class rank number 9 in a class of over 700 and a 36 on the ACT Mathematics section. She is a volunteer at her local hospital and library, and is currently taking both AP Statistics and AP Calculus BC. Varsha is part of the State-qualifying Varsity Decathlon team and co-president of the Model United Nations Club. The most important things in her life are family, friends, food, dance, music and school. You can probably find Varsha with a pair of headphones and a book, if she is not doing homework.

Nathan Lane, Instructor 

Nathan is currently a Junior at Tesoro High School taking AP Calculus AB. Math has always inspired him and has offered a way to observe intricate patterns in our world. Math offers amazing problem solving skills that can be used every day in the real world. Some of Nathans's hobbies include ice hockey, rubik's cubes, and reading!

Emily Ferguson, Instructor

 

Emily is a senior at Trabuco Hills High School with a current weighted GPA of 4.8, placing her in the top 2.1% of her class. She is currently enrolled in AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Physics, and AP Computer Science in order to satisfy her love of math. She represented her high school in the American Chemical Society Chemistry Olympiad, and she has scored 4's and 5's on all of the 6 AP tests she has taken. She loves volunteering at her church and local hospital as well as spending time with friends and family. When she is not in school or working, Emily is probably three hours deep into a philosophical conversation about the future of technology.

Samantha Ho, Instructor 

Samantha is attending California State University, Long Beach where she is majoring in Business Finance. She is currently enrolled in Statistics and took AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics in High School. Samantha recently graduated Tesoro High School with a weighted 4.2 GPA and was one of the top scholar athletes on the football team. In High School she was Treasurer of the National Honors Society, Co-President for Best Buddies, and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation. Math has always been her favorite subject alongside English Literature. Samantha loves spending her time dancing, reading, and sailing for her University.

I love Mathnasium because: I was able to experience being tutored by their staff and now I get

Bryce Bernhardt, Instructor 

Bryce is a senior at Laguna Hills High School. He has been in the Two-Way Immersion Program for 13 years and can teach math in English and Spanish. He received a perfect score on the SAT math level 2 subject test, a 35 on his ACT and a 5 on the AP Calculus exam. He has two years of experience tutoring in a variety of subjects including math, science and spanish. Bryce is the founder and president of the math club at Laguna Hills, which has the goal of going beyond his school’s math curriculum and participating in math competitions. When he’s not solving math problems, you can find him swimming or hanging out with his friends.

Samer Khan, Instructor

Samer is a graduate student at UC Irvine in the Master's in Public Health program and an intern at the OC Health Department. She did her undergraduate at UCI and finished in 2016 with a B.A. in Public Health Policy and a minor in Biology. Over the last 3 years, Samer has worked with students in grades 1 through 12 as a tutor for Chemistry, Math, Biology, and Spanish. During her year before starting grad school, she was a academic advisor for 10th and 12th graders and helped seniors with their university application essays. As a tutor and now Mathnasium Instructor, Samer is passionate about helping students become confident in their academic abilities and reach their full potential in preparation for their college careers and beyond.

Yilin Huo, Instructor 

Yilin, who also goes by Bob, is originally from Singapore and is currently a senior at Mission Viejo High School. He has a 4.8 GPA, putting him third in the Class of 2018. His is a member of the National Honors Society, the California Scholastic Federation, and the International Baccalaureate. Yilin is in AP Calculus BC and achieved a perfect 800 on the SAT Math Level II Subject Test. He will be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Economics and Math at Darthmouth College next fall.

In five years, I will be: traveling for work. 

I love Mathnasium because: I grew up needing individualized instruction to learn efficient math methods and I believe that is why I am so successful in math now. I want to pass this on through the Mathnasium Method and I love its success rate and how it works.
