Phrases like “I hate math,” or “I don’t get it,” are expressions of profound frustration. As Mathnasium founder Larry Martinek shrewdly observes: “Children don’t hate math. They do hate being confused and intimidated by math. With understanding comes passion, and with passion comes growth — a treasure is unlocked.”
Mathnasium of Cambridge is now open for business, bringing fun and effective supplementary math programs for community children from grades one to 12.
The learning center, located at 115 Dundas Street North, focuses solely on math and operates on the core belief that virtually any child can excel in the subject. The Mathnasium Method™, implemented at more than 800 Mathnasium centres internationally, is a unique program that provides each child with a customized learning plan and personalized instruction in a way that makes sense to them. Since its inception in 2003, Mathnasium has become one of the fastest-growing educational franchises. “Our students will receive the fundamental practice they need to master number facts, build computational skills, improve number sense, and gain an intuitive understanding of how numbers work,” says Linda Gao, owner of the Mathnasium of Cambridge franchise.
Gao notes that their goal is simple: to teach math in a way that makes sense to kids. “Mathnasium centres across the country have helped struggling students develop into ‘A’ students, and ‘A’ students go on to even greater achievements,” she says. “We are thrilled to be able to bring our Mathnasium Method™ to support the families of Cambridge.”
The Mathnasium experience begins with an assessment designed to pinpoint a child’s strengths and weaknesses. These results provide the foundation from which Mathnasium constructs the student’s customized learning plan. Students learn math in a friendly, productive learning environment and are taught by caring and knowledgeable instructors who are well-versed in integrating Mathnasium’s techniques with the math curriculum used in Cambridge schools. Developed from over 40 years of practical experience with thousands of students, the Mathnasium Method™ uses a unique combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to help children really understand math. Mathnasium students receive the support they need for school homework and tests while building their math foundations.
“As educators, we strive to offer Cambridge students a balanced math learning experience, one that fills in the gaps, keeps students on track with math taught in school and, most importantly, makes learning math a fun and joyful experience,” Gao concludes.
Mathnasium’s flat-fee service per month means that children have access to the centre all year, while the drop-in option accommodates parents’ busy schedules. Mathnasium recommends two to three times per week for best results. Hours are Monday to Thursday: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CLOSED on Friday and Sunday.
