Why Hands On STEM Learning Matters for Children

May 13, 2026 | Georgetown ON

When most parents think about science, they picture textbooks, memorization, and classrooms.

But for children, science becomes truly meaningful when they can see it happen in front of them.

That is why hands-on STEM learning is such an important part of our summer camp experience.

At Camp Mathnasium, students are not simply reading about scientific concepts. They are actively experimenting, observing reactions, asking questions, making predictions, and learning how to think critically through exploration.

Whether students are creating a “Rainbow in a Jar,” experimenting with colour-changing chemistry, or participating in interactive engineering and science challenges, the goal is not just entertainment. The goal is to develop curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills in a way that feels exciting and memorable.

STEM Activities Build More Than Science Skills

Many parents are surprised to learn that hands-on science activities strengthen far more than scientific knowledge alone.

These activities help students develop:

• Critical thinking
• Observation and reasoning skills
• Patience and focus
• Creativity and experimentation
• Confidence in asking questions
• Comfort with trial and error

In a world where many children spend increasing amounts of time passively consuming content online, STEM activities encourage students to become active thinkers and creators instead.

Why This Matters During the Summer

Summer learning loss is real, but keeping children engaged does not mean recreating school during July and August.

Students learn best when they are curious, involved, and emotionally engaged in what they are doing.

That is why our STEM Science Lab is designed to feel hands-on, collaborative, and enjoyable while still strengthening important thinking skills that transfer directly into the classroom.

Students are learning even when it simply feels like fun.

A Safe and Supportive Environment to Explore

Our instructors guide students through each activity step-by-step in a safe and supportive environment designed to encourage participation, creativity, and independent thinking.

The focus is not on perfection or memorization. It is on helping students become more confident thinkers who are comfortable exploring new ideas and solving problems independently.

By the end of camp, students leave with more than just completed activities. They leave with stronger curiosity, greater confidence, and a more positive relationship with learning itself.

For families considering summer enrichment, we are currently offering an Early Bird Special for the Mathnasium Ultra-Six Summer Day Camp, with the first 20 students receiving $100 OFF registration.
