Happy International Women's Day!

Mar 10, 2020 | Killarney

We were lucky to join in the celebration on March 8th at Westbrook Mall. We were actually teaching for a good part of this but I am very proud to know that my building sponsored a wonderful event. From mini makeovers, to swag giveaways - including Mathnasium goodies - the event was filled with music and entertainment. As a woman who worked in the technology field for years and many times as the only woman in the room, this is a very meaningful day to me. Women have worked harder than their male counterparts in the same positions for years. History has been made with women never being acknowledged for their contributions. We must stay united; growing and supporting one another for the betterment of society.

For those interested in seeing some of the great photos from the event, check it out:

I like to share something I learn about a special female every year so if I can indulge you, let's celebrate the life of Katherine Johnson who passed on Feb 24, 2020 at the age of 101. With some aspiring astronaut students at my centre, this seemed natural to want to share. Katherine was one of three female, black mathematicians who assisted the US in getting man out to space. There is an awesome biographical novel about her and her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson titled Hidden Figures. The book was also made into an award-winning film in 2016. She is credited with the most publications of any female or African-American in NASA history. You can read her full bio on NASA's website.
