Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: On your Ballot, match the measurements on the left with the appropriate units of measure on the right:

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: Sammy is wrapping a birthday gift and wants to find out how much ribbon he’ll need. He wants to wrap the ribbon all the way around the gift box twice, then have an extra 41/2 decimetres of ribbon for the bow on top. If the gift box is a cube that is 38 centimetres wide, how many centimetres of ribbon will he need?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: Ashley is playing a game on her smartphone that measures the distance she walks. Every 2000 metres, the game gives her a prize. Ashley starts the game and then walks 9 kilometres. How many prizes does she earn?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: It takes Alice 45 minutes to complete a jigsaw puzzle. It takes Keisha an hour to complete a jigsaw puzzle of the same size. If they work together on the same jig¬saw puzzle, how long will it take them to complete it?

Grades 5 and 6: Our Mathletes at this grade level struggled to solve the problem posed this past week. Landon correctly solved the problem and was the first correct solution to be drawn and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Wll done Landon! Also solving the problem was Aaliya and Grace P. who will receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.
