The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessment is designed to evaluate a child's math achievements compared to provincial standards. However, its true purpose extends beyond just scores—it helps determine whether your child has mastered the foundational math skills required to succeed in future grade levels.
Many parents overlook the significance of EQAO results in Grade 3 or Grade 6 because they do not impact grade advancement. However, while a Level 2 or 3 result may not seem alarming at first, it indicates gaps in understanding that can make future math learning more challenging. These gaps often become more evident in later years, leading to lower performance in Grade 6 and subsequently Grade 9 EQAO assessments. Many schools will start to consider Grade 9 EQAO results towards the final semester results.
Since EQAO measures a child's comprehension of math concepts from both current and previous grades, traditional tutoring often falls short. Most tutors provide a reactive approach—helping with immediate schoolwork but struggling to systematically close foundational gaps within a short period. Many tutors also lack access to diagnostic tools that provide a clear picture of these gaps. If you’re considering a private tutor, it is essential to ensure they can accurately assess and address all missing concepts rather than relying on memorization drills.
At Mathnasium, we have helped countless students catch up and prepare for EQAO. Our proprietary assessment pinpoints the exact math skills a child needs to succeed at their current and future grade levels. For example, before a Grade 6 student can confidently add fractions with the same denominator, they must first grasp the concept of wholes and parts. They need to understand that the numerator represents the shaded parts while the denominator represents the total parts. Many students learn to identify the numerator and denominator but struggle to grasp their meaning. This is similar to an adult hearing about AC and DC power without understanding their function in electricity.
With Mathnasium’s assessment, we create a customized learning plan tailored to your child's needs. Our goal is to help students catch up, get ahead, and stay ahead. We achieve this through our unique Mathnasium Method™, which includes five key ways of learning:
Visual (seeing math concepts in action)
Verbal (discussing and explaining ideas)
Written (practicing problems on paper)
Mental Math (developing number sense)
Tactile (using physical manipulatives for hands-on learning)
Mathnasium ensures students understand math concretely before moving on to abstract concepts, helping them build confidence and long-term proficiency.
Our centre, Mathnasium of The Glebe, is conveniently located at 856 Bank Street, at the intersection of Bank Street and Fifth Avenue. We invite parents to schedule a no-obligation, free assessment to understand their child’s math standing—even if they don’t plan to enroll. Knowing where your child stands in math is the first step toward success.
