David Gandolfo

Instructor
David is hardworking, funny, and intelligent fourth year student at York University. He is currently pursuing a specialized Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Mathematics for Education with a minor in Physics along with a Bachelor of Education. David's dream is to one day become a high school math teacher so he can inspire the next generation of geniuses to positively change the world. David's passion for math is so great that he is willing to make a career from teaching math and inspiring children to access their logical and mathematical potential. Throughout his educational experience, David has privately tutored many different students in a wide array of subjects, and because David studies math and education, he understands that students think differently and that math can be challenging for many people. However, David wants to build curiosity and ambition when it comes to math and science and most importantly, David wants to make math make sense. When he is not learning new math or exploring physics, David enjoys playing baseball and studying chess. He also loves to cook due to his ongoing experience as a chef at a popular local restaurant.

Larry Martinek

Larry Martinek More than thirty-five years ago, Larry Martinek was inspired to find a better way to teach children math. As a teacher-trainer and consultant in public and top private schools, and father to a mathematically gifted son, Larry possessed an incredibly comprehensive view of education. In his work with both stellar and struggling math programs, he clearly identified a common theme in mathematics instruction: a “serious disconnect between students’ basic skills training and the curriculum they are expected to master in the years to come.” Spurred by the challenges in math education, Larry Martinek decided to find an approach that would provide grade-school children with the strong mathematical foundation they need to succeed. Over the next three decades, Larry painstakingly developed and assembled a blend of methods and materials that proved highly effective for students of all ages. Instead of relying on traditional rote memorization and repetitive exercises, Larry’s work focused on helping children build deep mathematical understanding—number sense—by honing their math instincts and getting them to think like Mathematicians.
