The COVID Slide and Pre-algebra Gap Filling the Pre-algebra Gap and Preventing the COVID Slide

Oct 15, 2020 | South Friendswood

With schools being canceled, delayed, or moved online, you may have heard educators and others use the term “COVID slide” to describe the learning loss that is associated with the pandemic.

The COVID slide shows patterns of academic setbacks typical of those we see in the summer months. However, this year when we combine the COVID slide with the typical summer slide, more parents are worried about the academic success of their children this fall.

Then, add in 4-6 weeks of non-traditional virtual school or hybrid models to kick off the school year, and the degree of setback becomes even more unclear.

The implications of the COVID slide have additional complications for students including loss of resources and loss of opportunity to learn in person that go well beyond the traditional summer break for most families.

We are here to help

Along with policymakers, educators, and families in our community, Mathnasium of Friendswood has worked to provide support, tutoring, and help in math while the traditional learning model is disrupted.

We aim to help students succeed academically and to provide resources and support to children and families during this academic year--in all levels of math.

We are currently enrolling students for math tutoring online and in-person for grades Kindergarten through 12, however, we encourage our middle school to lower high school students to take math more seriously right now more than ever.

Our research has shown that in the school systems, math has been accelerated from the 7th to 9th grade level algebra. A lot of children are not prepared to move to algebra because most skip pre-algebra. Some are going from 6th grade math to 9th grade math without being assessed or understanding pre-algebra basics.

We are urging parents of 4th, 5th and 6th graders to be aware of this and to be sure your child is prepared to begin 7th grade with the basic foundations of algebra mastered.

This is what we are here to help with! And this year more than ever before. This acceleration in algebra levels will be more difficult this year with the learning gaps that have unavoidably taken place. But it is not too late.

Our math learning center is here to offer help to both students enrolled in public and private schools, as well as students being homeschooled.

This year more than ever, we are seeing learning take place in different environments and in different ways, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t successful!

Parents who are taking on a new task of homeschooling, we are here to help.

One of the most important things we can do is help your child overcome homework and assignment frustrations. Our instructors will set aside time to provide homework help and to help the kids understand assignments from their teachers, virtual programs or homeschool curriculums. We help them feel better prepared to complete more work independently at home—transforming homework frustration into a welcome challenge.

Our center is open Monday through Friday from 3pm-7pm each day, with individual and group math tutoring sessions available.

Sign up today to have your child participate in a RISK-FREE assessment where we can pinpoint your child’s exact strengths and weaknesses.
