Q: What’s something you wish parents and students knew when they enroll at Mathnasium?
A: Mathnasium is tutoring and so much more! As a learning center, our job is two-fold: to help students fill in any missing math knowledge/skill gaps, as well as, to keep them caught up on their current math work. Catching up happens with the learning plan in the first half of a student's session. During the second half, we work with students on their homework to make sure they are getting the assistance they need for their classes!
Q: What’s something that surprises most students?
A: Seeing the 'light bulb moments' from students is extremely fulfilling. It shows that they have come to enjoy the challenge of math, persevering through it. Most students end up leaving the center every day with a smile on their face, even those who hated math before coming to Mathnasium.
Q: What’s something that surprises most parents?
A: One of the biggest goals we set is building math confidence in students. From personal experience, there have been many students who previously despised math and now share their newfound knowledge of multiplication facts to their parents! Combining independent work with help from the instructor allows students to build confidence and critical thinking skills, which students carry everywhere they go.
Q: Any other insights?
A: We use only pencil and paper; none of the students work on iPads or computers (unless they are doing homework). We are firm believers that this way of learning helps students grasp concepts so much more. We also include many different types of learning, such as visual, verbal, and tactile. Every student learns differently, and we work with each student according to their needs.
