1. What is the most common thing you see in new students coming to Mathnasium for the first time?
A: New kids really don't want to open up and talk to the instructors, they feel out of place, and like they can't learn. But my job is to reassure these students that they are capable of so much more than they think they are. Once they realize that, they let their true colors show. It is a beautiful thing!
2. If there was one thing you could tell parents before they bring their student to Mathnasium what would it be?
A: Making true progress will take significant time, but our methods will make a real life changing difference. Also, even the most reluctant student usually has a smile on their face by the end of the session.
3. What things do the most successful students have in common?
A: Successful students can see that we truly believe in them, and that leads to a deep trust. Once they develop that trust in us, they want to be here and do good work. These students come in ready to learn, and want to do as many pages as possible.
4. What are some of the ways you teach math to your students?
A: I teach using personal connections. Relating what they may be learning elsewhere to Mathnasium work, and corelating it with things from their life outside of math helps a student in an incredibly deep way. This both helps build trust, and also makes everything more fun!
5. What do you think is the coolest thing about Mathnasium?
A: Seeing kids change their opinions about math is cool to witness. Some kids come in not wanting to be here at all, but after they get comfortable they will start to open up and try to learn. I love watching students gain confidence working with math, and seeing them grow! "
