The Meaning and Importance of the Equal Sign

When students don’t have a proper understanding of the mathematical meaning of the equal sign (=) it can lead to difficulties further down the road.

September 23rd was the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Often, it's considered the beginning of fall, but it's actually one of only two times a year when the number of hours of day and night are equal. This makes the equinox the perfect opportunity to discuss the meaning and importance of the equal sign (=).

Math symbols convey very specific meanings. Understanding them properly is essential to truly understanding math. As math tutors dedicated to building our students' confidence in math, we know that a correct and comfortable understanding of math symbols and their meanings can be of the utmost comfort.

The simplest definition, often used by younger students, is that the meaning of the equal sign is "the answer is." While it's correct when considering certain mathematical phrases, such as 1 + 3 = 4 (the answer is four), it doesn't work with more advanced phrasing: 1 + 3 = 2 + 2. "The answer is" 2 + 2 doesn't entirely make sense, since 2 + 2 is not really an "answer."

According to the Mathnasium Math DictionaryTM, the equal sign means "being the same in value as." When we think of the meaning of the equal sign (=) this way, many types of mathematical phrasing can become clearer.

1 + 3 = 4 (one plus three has the same value as four)

1 + 3 = 2 + 2 (one plus three has the same value as two plus two)

A = L x W (The area of a rectangle has the same value as the product of the rectangle's length and width.)

When students don’t have a proper understanding of the mathematical meaning of the equal sign (=) it can lead to difficulties further down the road.

Correctly understanding the meaning of the equal sign is absolutely critical to developing Number Sense and performance throughout all levels of math classes. Researchers at Texas A&M University have shown that achievement in careers requiring any kind of mathematical skills require a correct understanding of the equal sign.

By spending just a little time ensuring students have a solid understanding of math symbols, we can help them reach success far into their academic and professional futures.

Whether it's the autumnal or spring equinox, every day is a day to celebrate changing lives through math at Mathnasium!
