Frequently Asked Questions About Mathnasium Methodology

Nov 3, 2024 | Center City

My child already excels in math.  Will Mathnasium address their needs?

Absolutely.  Since Mathnasium is customized to the needs of each individual student, we can help advanced students stay engaged and stimulated by introducing them to more challenging math topics.  More importantly, we can also help your child to develop even stronger numerical fluency and critical thinking skills, which are essential for continued success in math.

Why do children struggle with math?

Have you ever watched a foreign movie without subtitles? It can be confusing and frustrating because you don't understand the language!  If your child is missing key math skills, this is exactly how they feel in math class!

The teachers are expected to cover vast amounts of material in a short period of time. If your child doesn't get a chance to master a skill for whatever reason –  there is no time to give the necessary time and attention that they need. Teachers must move quickly to stay “on schedule." In some cases, kids may fall behind in math.

What happens next?  The class moves on! Here come multiplication facts, fractions, percentages, decimals, mixed numbers, exponents, ratios, x=?, divisibility rules, algebra, geometry, equations. It never slows down so your child can catch up! They feel overwhelmed, embarrassed, and all alone! They begin to expect and accept failure as the "new normal" and think "I'm just not good in math!". If they lose confidence in themselves we typically see all of their other grades begin to suffer.

Will a private one-on-one tutor work?

Private tutors can help children "survive" tonight's homework and prepare for the upcoming test. At Mathnasium, our mission is to help every student develop a deep understanding of math, regardless of their starting point.

We do not replace private tutors. We complement the efforts of schools, teachers, and private tutors by offering proprietary personalized learning plans based on each student’s unique needs. Through our comprehensive math skills assessment, we identify if a student has any math gaps, is working at grade level, or if they are an enrichment student ready to be challenged. We have some families who have both private tutors and their kids come to Mathnasium.

How is Mathnasium different?

Great Question! The very first thing we do is give your child a math skills assessment. It is both a written and oral assessment so that we can get a deep understanding of not only what they know, but how they think!

We sit down with them, put them at ease, and give them an assessment that doesn't feel too easy or too hard. Most importantly, we find out HOW THEY LEARN! Then we build their trust by giving them a few ideas and strategies that they can use immediately. We use the results to build a your student's customized learning plan that targets their skill gaps and quickly shows them success. In many cases “success” in math is something they have been craving!

Why is confidence in math important?

It's not just important, It's critical! Kids need to see that they can do the work so that they can feel confident! This fresh, new confidence will spill over to many other areas of your child's life. At this point you will start to see peace at home! You won't be having to fight with them to do homework. Not only will they have the confidence and the skills to attack it but they'll start bringing home better grades from school. How do we know this? Because we have seen it over and over again with hundreds of our students!

Is this one-on-one tutoring?

Another great question! Our instructors are not just average math tutors. We have brilliant, engaging, inspiring math experts that work one on one with your child. They make sure your child understands what to do. Then the instructor steps back and lets your child work independently to give them the time to process this new information without the pressure and stress of being watched. It also prevents a "learned helplessness" where the student feels that they need the instructor sitting in front of them all the time in order to be successful.  [We can't be there for their math tests!]

Our instructors come back to make sure they are doing the problems correctly, give them encouragement, and praise them for their efforts! If the student needs more math help we simply teach the lesson again in a different way without judgment or ridicule until they "get it." This enables your child to become a "confident, independent learner." At Mathnasium, we call this Team Teaching. We have been practicing Team Teaching for decades and it works!

What can we expect during an assessment?

Assessment can take up to 40 mins. Parent can wait at the deli next door that offers tables, chairs and restrooms.  You can find parking on Wood Street or in the garage on Wood Street. Your student will sit down with an instructor for about 40 mins. The instructor will first do a verbal assessment, than a written assessment. Let your student know this is not a test. After the student is done, we will text you and then go over the results. Our goal is to learn where your student needs help in math. We support the extraordinary work that teachers, schools and private tutors do.  We have a few programs to select from based on your student's availability.  Follow us on Social channels to see what we're up to: Instagram  Facebook and  TikTok
