Moving to Virginia? Here's What You Should Know About Your Child's Math Class

A father and daughter collaborate on a project, focused and engaged in their creative work together.

Students relocating to Virginia will learn under the state's distinct Standards of Learning (SOLs). When it comes to math class, this often means adjusting to a different pacing and topic order than what they were used to at their previous school.

We're Mathnasium of Chester, a Virginia-based math learning center. Today, our education specialists will walk you through what to expect from Virginia's math standards, what each grade covers, and practical steps to help your child adjust quickly.

What to Expect From Virginia's Math Standards

Virginia teaches math under its own Standards of Learning, known as the SOLs. The state revised them in 2023, for the first time since 2016, with a sharper focus on grade-specific expectations and computational fluency before students move on to more complex work.

Here's what the 2023 revision changed.

Expectations at each grade are now more explicit, even though topics still reappear across grades.

Foundational skills, like fact fluency, are expected to be mastered before a child advances to the next concept.

Five content strands run consistently from kindergarten through eighth grade:

These strands are what show up on report cards and teacher communications, so matching them against your child's old school's labels is the fastest way to spot the overlap.

Virginia’s SOLs give families a roadmap for what children should know at each grade level. Use them to spot gaps, understand what comes next, and identify where extra practice or support may help.

What Each Grade Covers Under Virginia's Math Standards

To help you spot where your child's previous school and Virginia align, we’ve grouped the SOL content by grade level. We recommend you review both your child's current grade and the grade right before it to pinpoint any sequence gaps early.

Kindergarten Through Grade 2: Building Number Sense

Early elementary focuses on counting, comparing, and representing quantities, along with recognizing simple shapes and patterns. Virginia introduces some of this earlier than many other states:

  • Kindergarten and first grade: Students count by 5s and 10s and group objects into sets of tens and ones, groundwork most states don't formalize until later grades.

  • First and second grade: Students are expected to recall basic addition and subtraction facts from memory rather than counting them out each time.

  • By second grade: Students begin working with simple fractions and place value into the hundreds.

Grades 3 Through 5: Multiplication, Fractions, and Decimals

In these grades, fact fluency expands from addition and subtraction to automatic recall of multiplication and division tables. Students also move into comparing and operating with fractions and decimals.

  • Third grade: The focus is on mastering basic multiplication and division facts (0–10), modeling proper fractions with concrete representations, and solving multi-step word problems using all four operations.

  • Fourth grade: Instruction expands to multi-digit multiplication, conversions between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and greatest common factor which is a concept many states delay until middle school.

  • Fifth grade: Students solve word problems with fraction and decimal operations, learn order of operations, and take on prime factorization and least common multiple earlier than in many other state frameworks.

The pace accelerates from there.

Grades 6 Through 8: Ratios, Proportions, and Algebra Readiness

Middle school moves beyond basic arithmetic and into abstract reasoning, proportional relationships, and early algebra concepts.

  • Sixth grade: Focus centers on ratio concepts, unit rates, and operations with rational numbers (including integers and absolute value).

  • Seventh grade: Content moves into proportional reasoning, solving two-step linear equations and inequalities, and calculating compound probability.

  • Eighth grade: Instruction covers pre-algebra foundational skills, including multi-step linear equations, functional relationships, and geometric transformations.

In Virginia, 8th grade sets the course for your child's high school trajectory. While standard 8th-grade math prepares students for Algebra I in 9th grade, many districts offer accelerated pathways so students finish Algebra 1 or Geometry before high school.

Here in Chesterfield County, completing Algebra 1 or higher by 8th grade is actually a requirement for several of our county's advanced regional high school programs.

If you're new to the community, an early check on math placement keeps your child confident and on track for high school.

High School: Course Pathways Replace Grade Levels

High school math drops grade-level groupings entirely. Instead, students follow course sequences based on their math background and long-term goals:

  • Standard Foundation: Algebra 1 and Geometry form the core requirements for graduation.

  • Upper-Level Math: Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Probability & Statistics build advanced problem-solving skills.

  • Accelerated Pathways: Math Analysis, Pre-Calculus, and Advanced Placement courses like Calculus and Statistics prepare students for competitive college STEM programs.

Where your child starts in 9th grade depends heavily on their middle school preparation, which is why that 8th-grade placement decision makes such a big difference down the road.

What Parents Can Do to Help Their Child Adjust Quickly to Virginia Math

We know that relocating to a new school system will require making adjustments to a new math curriculum and pacing. With that in mind, we've put together a clear, step-by-step roadmap to help your family navigate the transition smoothly and build confidence from day one.

  • Gather previous standardized test records: Bring recent state testing scores, MAP/i-Ready reports, or course syllabi to registration. Virginia schools use these to evaluate background knowledge and determine initial placement before classes begin.

  • Confirm middle school math tracking: Because completing Algebra 1 by 8th grade is a prerequisite for many regional specialty high schools and advanced tracks in Chesterfield County, verify your child's math placement as soon as you enroll.

  • Check Verified Credit transfer rules (High School): If your child is entering high school, ask guidance counselors how previous coursework applies toward Virginia's "Verified Credit" graduation requirements and whether previous state exams satisfy SOL equivalents.

  • Exercise Military Compact protections (if applicable): Military families should notify the school upon enrollment to ensure course placement, honors continuity, and testing accommodations are honored under the Interstate Compact.

  • Request a targeted baseline check: Early in the term, ask your child's teacher to evaluate specific readiness in fact fluency, fraction operations, and proportional reasoning rather than waiting for general report cards.

  • Understand the SOL safety net: Virginia requires SOL end-of-course testing (typically in May, or January for block schedules). If a student narrowly misses passing with a score of 375–399, schools offer expedited retakes during the same window.

  • Utilize county library academic tools: Families in Chesterfield County can access free LearningExpress practice tests for middle and high schoolers, along with hands-on STEM kits for elementary students through the local library system.

How Mathnasium of Chester Helps Students Excel in Virginia Math

Mathnasium of Chester is a math-only learning center dedicated to helping K–12 students of all skill levels excel in math.

Whether a child needs to build fact fluency to match Virginia's foundational-skills-first pacing, catch up on a strand their old school hadn't reached yet, or simply confirm they're on track under the new SOLs, we can support them.

Our proprietary teaching approach, the Mathnasium Method™, is designed around each student's needs and learning style to help them learn and master math.

Our approach includes:

  • Assessment and Personalized Learning Plans: Each student begins their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment that identifies their current skill level, learning goals, and learning style. From those findings, we build a personalized learning plan tailored to closing any pacing gaps quickly.

  • Teaching for Understanding: Our specially trained instructors use natural language and a mix of verbal, visual, mental, tactile, and written techniques so each concept lands before we move forward.

  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: We give students time to work through problems independently. That productive struggle helps them learn to trust their own reasoning, even when the material is being presented in an order they're not used to. When we do step in, we explain both the how and the why behind each answer, so students build problem-solving and critical thinking skills they can use in math and beyond.

  • An Engaging and Fun Learning Environment: Sessions include games, earned rewards, and consistent celebration of progress. Students build confidence alongside fluency, which matters most in the first few months after a move, when a new math class can otherwise feel like one more unfamiliar thing to navigate.

The impact extends beyond the classroom:

  • 94% of parents report an improvement in their child's math skills and understanding

  • 93% of parents report their child's improved attitude toward math after attending Mathnasium

  • 90% of students saw an improvement in their school grades
