FAQ
The ACT evaluates knowledge and skills in:
Pre-Algebra and Algebra, covering fundamental operations, solving equations, and working with inequalities.
Statistics & Probability, focusing on data analysis, interpreting graphs, and calculating averages and probabilities.
Geometry, emphasizing properties of shapes, measurement of angles, and area calculations.
Trigonometry, including the use of sine, cosine, and tangent functions to solve problems.
The main differences between the ACT and SAT math sections are in the range of topics covered and the structure of the questions, which influences how students approach each test.
Math Content: The SAT focuses heavily on algebra and data analysis, while the ACT covers a wider variety of topics, including more geometry and trigonometry.
Question Style: ACT questions are often more direct, whereas the SAT includes more word problems and requires multi-step reasoning and analytical skills.
Scoring: ACT math scores range from 1–36, while SAT math scores are reported on a 200–800 scale.
Time Per Question: Students typically have about 1 minute per question on the ACT but about 1.5 minutes per question on the SAT.
Calculator Use: Calculators are allowed for all questions on the ACT, but the SAT has one section where calculators are not permitted.
A good math score on the ACT depends on the student’s college goals and the schools they’re applying to.
The ACT math section is graded on a 1 to 36 scale, with the national average hovering around 20-21.
A score in the range of 24-26 is typically considered solid for many colleges, while a 30-34 range is competitive for highly selective institutions.
A perfect 36 is rare but an exceptional achievement.
For students seeking merit-based scholarships, aiming for a score of 28 or higher can enhance their chances.
Ultimately, a good math score is one that supports the student’s aspirations and aligns with the expectations of their chosen schools.
