Your child comes to you frustrated over a math problem, and you say, "Don't feel bad, I was never a math person either." While you mean it as comfort, your child hears something else. Math struggle runs in the family, and pushing through it might not pay off.
This response usually comes from parents’ history with math. If math felt hard or embarrassing for you growing up, sharing that in the moment feels like solidarity, a way to say, "This is normal, you're not failing." It also lets you sidestep a problem you might not remember how to solve yourself.
But comfort built on shared defeat still teaches a fixed story. Your child learns that some people simply aren't "math people" and that effort has limits it can't push past.

There’s a confusing math problem at home that your student needs to solve, but you redirect to the teacher. As time goes by, your child may stop bringing math home at all. The kitchen table becomes a place where that subject just doesn't come up.
This usually isn't about disinterest. Redirection to the teacher feels responsible, like staying in your lane and trusting the professional. It also protects you from the fear of explaining a concept wrong or getting pulled into a homework standoff.

That progression starts small and tends to follow a familiar shape:
Your child gets stuck on a concept, and the feeling of being stuck goes unnamed.

In a review of math anxiety, researchers describe it as an emotional reaction, feelings of tension, fear, or worry, that can disrupt how well children think and solve problems in math.
Before you solve any problem, the frustration in the room needs a place to go. Put a name to the feeling you notice in your child, and they feel recognized instead of alone with it.
"You look really frustrated right now," or "I can hear how stressed you are about this," opens the door. "It's not a big deal" or "calm down" tend to close it, even when that's not the intent.
"I'm bad at math" locks a feeling into an identity. The word "yet" turns that same feeling into something temporary, a stage your child is only going through.
Psychologist Carol Dweck’s growth‑mindset research (summarized in Mindsets: A View From Two Eras) shows that when students see their abilities as fixed, they’re more likely to give up in the face of difficulty, but if they see those abilities as something that can grow, they’re more likely to stick with challenging work and improve over time.
So, if your child says, “I’m just bad at this,” try saying, “It feels that way right now, but you’re still figuring it out. You don’t understand this yet.” Small as it sounds, that one word reframes struggle as timing, not identity.

Curiosity about where the confusion actually starts opens the problem up more than an explanation offered right away. You can ask:
Show me where it starts to feel confusing.
What part feels okay so far?
Then, reflect back on what you hear, "So the first part makes sense, but the word problem part is throwing you off." A question like this turns the moment into something you and your child figure out at the same pace, rather than one you set for them.
Give your child one small step for right now, and one for later, so a hard moment doesn't just sit there unresolved.
Right now, that might look like saying, "Let's redo just the step where you got stuck." For later, try something like, "Tomorrow, let's ask your teacher one question about this."
