Parents did you know that in Friendswood ISD, by the time a student finishes the 5th grade, their high school math career, and their placement in the top 10% of their graduating class is largely already determined. This matters because Texas guarantees that students in the top ten percent of their high school class get automatic admission to all state-funded universities, like: (University of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech., and others).
A student’s math placement is decided based on their 5th grade performance. The math courses your students take in junior high determine what Advance Placement math courses they will be able to take in high school. Everyone knows getting “A(s)” in AP classes is what puts a student in the top 10%.
Traditional Path
The traditional path for math that most of us took was 6th grade math, 7th grade math, 8th grade pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 in 9th grade, Geometry in 10th grade, Algebra 2 in 11th grade, and Pre-Calculus in 12th grade.

Single Jump
Based on high 5th grade scores FISD will skip 6th grade math for a single jump resulting in, 7th grade math in the 6th grade, pre-Algebra in 7th grade, Algebra 1 in the 8th grade, Geometry in the 9th grade, Algebra 2 in the 10th grade, Pre-Calculus in the 11th grade, and Calculus 1 in the 12th grade.

Double Jump
Also, based on higher 5th grade scores FISD will skip 6th grade math, (one jump), resulting in 7th grade math in the 6th grade, skip 8th grade pre-Algebra, (another jump), resulting Algebra 1 in the 7th grade, Geometry in the 8th grade, Algebra 2 in the 9th grade, Pre-Calculus in the 10th grade, Calculus 1 in the 11th grade, and Calculus 2 in the 12th grade.

Mathnasium is finding that many students taking Algebra 1 in the 7th grade are struggling because they are not ready to make that double jump. If you have a child in the 3rd – 5th grade, come see us at Mathnasium of Friendswood so we can get your student prepared for the double jump that is going to happen. Our students are often 2 grade levels ahead by the time they are in 7th grade and that is what will be needed if you want your child to go on to be the top 10% of their class and get the automatic admission to Texas’ top universities.
If you have a 6th - 8th grader who needs help because they skipped a year of math when they should not have, come see us at Mathnasium of Friendswood so we can get your student back on track for math topics that were rushed before. Also, if your child did not make a jump, but you want to prepare them for an exam so they can, Mathnasium of Friendswood will help get ready for that exam as well.
Fill out our contact section on the top right of this web page and we will help you through this process. See you soon. We would be glad to help.
