Many parents and teachers have students looking for extra math or test prep help, but don’t know where to start. They become interested in hiring a math tutor, or enrolling at our math learning center, but wonder exactly how a math tutor can help, what they do and why it’s important.
So, today we want to go over some of the most common FAQs about our Mathnasium math tutors…
-
What do math tutors do? Our math tutors typically work with students on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule to help with homework, class assignments or test prep. When a tutor begins working with a student, they will do a thorough exam and assessment to help understand where the gaps in learning are, or where a student lacks understanding. Then, they will construct a personalized learning and tutoring plan to help that student reach their goals.
-
Will hiring a tutor benefit my child? If your child is struggling, falling behind or you notice their grades temporarily slipping, then the combination of getting math tutoring help and more practice will most likely help them. Sometimes students feel more comfortable asking questions and opening up to a math tutor in a one-on-one environment. Our tutors can also help clarify concepts taught in class and teach them in a way your child understands.
-
Can a math tutor help my child prepare for the STAAR, SAT or ACT exams? Yes! Our math tutors can help with any of these standardized tests. We offer test prep tutoring sessions, practice exams, review material and more. We can also help give advice and guidance on test taking strategies and techniques that will help your child as well.

Should I continue math tutoring through the summer months? One of the most common misconceptions is that a child only needs math tutoring and practice during the school year. In fact, summertime can be one of the most beneficial times of the year to enroll and continue in math tutoring sessions! This is because summer is the most common time for students to forget, fall behind and experience the “summer slide,” or gap in learning. And if there already is a learning gap or struggle with math, then by the fall this becomes even more problematic. Use the summer months to catch up, review or even get ahead before school begins again in the fall. Look out for our summer package deals we will launch beginning in April!
