It’s a new year and for some of our students, a new semester or new math class. Today we want to focus on Algebra classes and spotlight the issue of students struggling with Algebra readiness.
Algebra is more than just another subject on a child's math trajectory. It marks a turning point in a student's mathematical education—it's the culmination of all the math that has come up to this point and a foundation for high school and college math classes. 
Understanding Algebra is a prerequisite for even basic-level college math and science classes.
Getting ready for Algebra
So, what does a student need to know to be ready for Algebra? The answer is numbers. A student needs to be comfortable manipulating variables, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. If you aren’t comfortable with numbers, understanding problems with variables in it will be more difficult.
Algebra actually starts before a student is exposed to Pre-Algebra in middle school. Algebra presents students with abstract sides of math, so to make sense of it here are some math concepts and skills students need to master to prepare for Algebra I:
Fluency with basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
A solid understanding of fractions, percents, and decimals--and how they're all related
Ratio and proportion
Probability
Geometry formulas and vocabulary: perimeter, area, circumference, etc.z
Integers, the number line, and integer operations
