Drill too much, and children are told they don't really understand anything. Drill too little and the basics slow them down on everything else. Neither extreme is the full picture.
What separates students who use memorization well from those who don't is knowing exactly where it helps and where it hits a wall. Today, Mathnasium's education specialists walk you through both.

Two Types of Math Knowledge
Math learning sits on two tracks, and knowing which one your child is on at any given moment is useful.
The first is procedural knowledge: knowing how to execute a sequence of steps. Multiplying 7 × 8. Carrying numbers in column addition. Applying the order of operations. This is where memorization lives and where consistent repetition builds speed and accuracy.
The second is conceptual understanding: knowing why something works.
This kind of knowledge doesn't come from drilling but from working through the logic until it makes sense.
Neither track alone gets your child far.
The goal is both, and the question is knowing which one a specific topic calls for.

Where Memorization Works in Your Favor
Your child's memorization of math facts is worth the effort when the goal is fluency: fast, automatic recall that frees up mental space for the harder parts of a problem.
Here's why that matters. Working memory, the mental workspace we use to hold and process information, has limited capacity.
Cognitive psychologist George Miller's foundational research established that working memory can hold only a small number of pieces of information at once.
When basic facts aren't automatic, a chunk of that capacity gets spent retrieving them. That leaves less room for the actual thinking a problem requires.
From working with students across every grade level, these are the areas where building automaticity makes the biggest difference:

Multiplication tables up to 12. Once these are automatic, multi-digit multiplication, factoring, and fraction simplification are done much faster.

Addition and subtraction facts. Number bonds built early reduce the mental load across every level of math that follows.

Common fraction-decimal-percent equivalents. Knowing by heart that 1/4 = 0.25 = 25% saves meaningful time on tests and multi-step problems.

Key formulas in geometry and algebra. The area of a circle, the slope formula, the quadratic formula; these should be committed to memory once your child understands what they mean.
Notice that last point: formulas should be memorized once your student understands what they mean. That qualifier matters, and we'll come back to it.

Where Memorization Stops Working
Memorizing a procedure without understanding the logic behind it works fine until the problem changes. And in math, problems change constantly.
Take fraction division. Young learners memorize "flip and multiply" and can execute the steps correctly on a straightforward problem. Put that same operation inside a word problem, or try to explain why flipping works, and the memorized procedure offers no guidance. There's no underlying logic to draw on.
This will become a more serious problem when math gets more demanding.
For example, algebra doesn't reward memorized sequences because equations come in too many forms. What works is understanding the principle that both sides of an equation must stay balanced, and applying that principle to whatever form the equation takes.
The same pattern shows up in:

Word problems, where recognizing what operation to use requires understanding, not recall.

Multi-step problems, where an early error compounds because there's no conceptual check on whether the work is heading in the right direction.

Topics that build on earlier ones, moving from linear equations to systems of equations, or from basic exponents to exponential functions. Each step assumes the previous one was understood, not just practiced.
Memorized steps give students one path through a problem. Understanding the concept gives them the ability to find a path even when the problem looks unfamiliar.

Some math topics reward memorization. Others demand something more.
4 Warning Signs That Memorization Is Carrying Too Much Weight
Over-reliance on memorization shows up in several recognizable ways. Here's what parents should watch for:

The problem looks different, and everything falls apart. Understanding a concept means being able to adapt when the format or wording changes. Purely memorized steps offer no flexibility when that happens.

Your child gets the right answer but can't explain why. Being able to say "I followed the steps" is not the same as understanding what those steps are doing.

Strong on homework, weaker on tests. Homework often mirrors the examples shown in class. Tests mix things up. A consistent gap between the two can reveal how much of the work is recognition rather than understanding.

Difficulty checking their own work. Without a sense of the logic behind a solution, there's no internal check on whether an answer is reasonable.
One or two of these, in isolation, might just reflect an off week or an unfamiliar topic. Several of them together, across different subjects, point to a pattern to address.

4 Ways to Build Fluency and Understanding in Math
Through years of working with K–12 students in over 1,100 learning centers, we’ve seen these four strategies help students build confidence, fluency, and true understanding at the same time.
1. Introduce the Concept Before the Procedure
When children understand why a formula or procedure works before memorizing it, the memorization lasts longer and reconstructs more easily under pressure.
Before your child drills a new procedure, spend one session on the why. For the area of a triangle, ask: *
That one conversation changes how securely the formula sits in memory.
You shouldn’t skip straight to the steps because the test is coming up. Short-term gains from drilling an unexplained procedure tend to collapse under test conditions when the problem looks slightly different.
2. Use Retrieval Practice Instead of Re-Reading or Re-Drilling
Research on retrieval practice consistently shows that testing recall, actively pulling information from memory, builds stronger retention than re-reading notes or repeating the same drill. This is where memorization works in your child's favor.
Instead of asking your child to read through their notes again, close the book and ask them to explain the concept out loud, write the formula from memory, or solve a problem type they haven't seen in a few days. The effort of retrieval is what makes it stick.
Try a simple flashcard rotation for multiplication facts, fraction-decimal equivalents, and key formulas, but only after the concept behind each one has been established. Retrieval practice on understood material is powerful. Retrieval practice on unexplained steps just entrenches the wrong foundation.
3. Use the Warning Signs to Diagnose, Not Just Observe
If your child consistently blanks when the problem format changes, that's the signal to go back to the concept, not to drill more of the same. If they can do homework but struggle on tests, the issue is likely recognition rather than understanding.
When you spot a warning sign, name it specifically with your child: not as a criticism but as useful information. "It looks like you know the steps, but let's check if we understand what they're doing." Then work backward to the concept before moving forward.
Avoid responding to a warning sign with more practice of the same type. That reinforces the procedure without addressing the gap underneath it.
4. When a New Topic Feels Hard, Look Back Before Pushing Forward
Math builds on itself more directly than any other subject. When a new topic feels disproportionately hard, the difficulty is usually not with the new topic. It sits in an earlier concept that was memorized rather than understood.
Before adding more practice on the new topic, trace back one step. If your child is struggling with algebraic equations, check whether the equal sign is understood as a relationship between two sides rather than a prompt to produce an answer. If fractions inside equations feel confusing, check whether fraction operations were understood or just drilled.
A student struggling with systems of equations in 8th grade may have a gap in linear equation understanding from 7th grade, which itself may trace back to fraction fluency from 5th grade. More systems practice won't close that gap.
When tracing back at home hits its limit, when the gap is hard to locate or the concept is too far back to address in a homework session, that's when structured outside support makes the most difference.
