Math Phobia: How to Spot the Signs and Help Your Child Overcome It

Your child might understand math as you practice together at home, but completely blank when a problem appears on a test. They may also feel a lot of fear or tension around math, especially under time pressure or when they feel watched.

These moments can be signs of math anxiety, sometimes informally called math phobia. It is a well-documented response that can interfere with the thinking your child needs to solve a problem, even when they understand the underlying math.

Today, we'll look at the science behind math anxiety, how you can recognize it, how it differs from other math-related struggles, and what you can do to help your child overcome it.

Math Phobia Explained: What Happens in the Brain

Math phobia, or math anxiety, as researchers usually call it, can make your child feel tense, worried, or afraid around math. That reaction can show up during a test, in class, or even in everyday situations involving numbers, according to research (2002) by Ashcraft et al.

Math anxiety can build in a pattern, from early worry to avoiding math altogether:

1. Anxiety may set in before the math work even begins

Your student may begin feeling anxious as soon as they know math is coming.

In a 2012 study, researchers Lyons and Beilock used brain imaging to see what happens in the moments right before someone starts a math problem. They found greater activity in a brain region associated with pain and threat while participants were anticipating a math task, before they started solving it. 

Research by Young and colleagues (2012) has also linked math anxiety with increased activity in the amygdala, a region involved in processing fear and threat.

So when your learner says, "I can't do this" before putting pencil to paper, they may already be feeling some of that math-related anxiety.

2. How math phobia affects problem-solving

Math anxiety can also strain working memory, the mental space your child needs to solve the problem in front of them, as Ma and Sun reported in their 2025 study

Even when your student knows the material, they may suddenly forget a step or go blank because of worry, taking up their working memory.

You can picture it this way. Say you are trying to solve 24 × 7 while someone is talking loudly in your ear. You may still know how to multiply, but part of your attention is being pulled somewhere else.

3. What math phobia can lead to

Left unaddressed, math anxiety can eventually push your child to avoid math altogether. They may start skipping the practice they need most because it feels too uncomfortable to face.

A 2025 study by Liu et al. describes this connection between math anxiety and avoidance. Math avoidance stems from how difficult a problem feels rather than lack of interest. The harder a task seems, the more a highly math-anxious student may pull away from it, sometimes before they have even tried.

So, what looks like giving up or a lack of motivation might be your child trying to avoid an overwhelming moment for them.

How to Recognize Math Phobia

Math anxiety can show up differently from one child to another. Based on research and our own experience, we’ve grouped several common patterns by what you may notice at home or around schoolwork.

A. Signs in Thinking and Math Performance 

Because math anxiety can take up some of your student’s working memory, it may affect both their performance and the way they work through problems. You may spot signs such as:

  • Your learner understands the material at home but gets stuck on timed tests or when someone is watching.

  • They lose track of steps in multi-step problems.

  • They reread the same line several times without moving forward.

Performance anxiety may become more noticeable in the teen years, around age 13 and up, especially during high-stakes tests and multi-step algebra that puts more demand on working memory. 

We suggest trying a simple comparison: compare how your student handles the same type of problem in two settings: untimed at home and under a short time limit. If their accuracy drops noticeably under time pressure or observation, this might point toward math anxiety.

B. Emotional and Self-Talk Signs

Math anxiety can also change your child’s self-talk around math. Instead of focusing on the problem in front of them, they may start using negative labels such as “I’m bad at math” or “I’m just not a math person.” 

You may also notice: 

  • Tearfulness 

  • Irritability 

  • Frustration around math tasks

  • An outsized reaction to one test or assignment 

According to research by Luttenberger et al. (2018), these emotional and self-belief patterns are common features of math anxiety.

To understand how your child sees themselves as a math learner, ask what they tell themselves when the work gets difficult, and listen closely to their response:

  • a broad label such as "I always mess this up"  may be a sign of math anxiety

  • a specific observation such as “I forgot how to do this step” usually points to a particular skill or moment of confusion

C. Body Signs

The same research by Luttenberger et al. suggests that math anxiety can also show up through physical reactions. 

For some children, it can look like:

  • Before math class or a test: stomachache, headache, or nausea

  • While working: clammy hands, flushed skin, or faster breathing

  • Under pressure: a tense posture or freezing up during a problem

These physical symptoms can be a clear sign of math anxiety in younger learners around ages 5 to 8, because they may not yet have the words to explain what they are feeling. 

You may try to keep a one- to two-week log noting math test or quiz days alongside any physical complaints before, during, or after. Look for a pattern tied specifically to math demands, rather than treating any single day as conclusive.

D. Behavioral and Avoidance Signs

Your student may start avoiding math when anxiety makes the work feel uncomfortable. That can feel easier in the moment, but in the long term it may mean less practice and more difficulty returning to the same skills. 

This pattern aligns with Carey et al.’s 2016 study, which describes a two-way relationship between math anxiety and math performance.

Avoidance signs may include:

  • Before homework: your learner delays starting math for as long as possible.

  • During homework: they ask for frequent breaks or race through the work just to finish.

  • When the work gets difficult: they leave problems blank, skip them, or stop altogether.

  • When they have a choice: they steer away from optional math courses or activities.

Here is how you can spot the pattern. Over a week of homework, notice how long it takes your child to get started, how often they take breaks, and whether they attempt or skip difficult problems. If they keep putting off homework and skipping the hard problems, this might be math avoidance.

How to Tell Math Phobia Apart From Other Math Struggles

How to Help Your Student Overcome Math Phobia

You can use these research-backed strategies at home to help your child feel more comfortable with math and respond more calmly when anxiety starts to take over.

  1. Pre-test expressive writing: Before a test or tough homework, have your student spend two minutes writing down what they're worried about and one thing they can control. Research by Park and colleagues found this kind of brief writing exercise can free up mental space that anxiety would otherwise occupy.

  2. Confidence check-in: Before checking an answer, ask your learner to rate how sure they are on a 1-5 scale. This can help them notice the difference between feeling uncertain and not understanding the math, so one difficult problem is less likely to affect how they approach the next one. 

  3. Error analysis: When your child makes a mistake, circle it and ask them to explain what they were thinking. Then, work through the correction together so they can understand where their reasoning changed and feel more confident the next time they face a similar problem. 

  4. Breathing routine for freeze moments: Teach your student a simple 4-4-6 breath: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, and exhale for 6. Pair it with a short cue such as, “I just need a moment to think.” Khng’s research supports brief breathing exercises as a way to reduce math-related stress. Practice the routine during calm, low-pressure moments first, so it feels familiar when they need it.

  5. Mind your own attitude toward math: Try to avoid saying things like "I was never good at math either." A study by Maloney and colleagues shows that parents’ own math anxiety can influence how their children feel about math. So calm, encouraging language at home can help keep your learner from picking up the same worry.

You may want to bring in additional support if your child keeps struggling with foundational skills despite regular practice, continues to feel distressed around math, or keeps using broad labels such as “I’m just bad at math” even when their work shows they are capable of more.
