An asymptote describes a concave line on a graph, that almost touches the x- and/or y-axis, but doesn't quite make it there. It looks like this:

Wolfram Math World gives us a more technical definition: "An asymptote is a line or curve that approaches a given curve arbitrarily closely, as illustrated in the above diagram."
