Mathematician of the Day: Benoit Mandelbrot

Benoit Mandelbrot was Google's Person-of-the-Day on November 20th, and for very good reason! But first, let's get some of his basic details:

  • He was born on November 20, 1924 annd passed away on October 14, 2010.
  • He grew up in a family of doctors and scientists.
  • He survived WWII, went to college in France, and moved to the United States, where he got a job with computer company IBM.
  • On June 23, 1999, Mandelbrot received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from the University of St Andrews.
  • He was a professor at many different esteemed colleges: Professor of the Practice of Mathematics at Harvard University, Professor of Engineering at Yale, Professor of Mathematics at the École Polytechnique, Professor of Economics at Harvard, and Professor of Physiology at the Einstein College of Medicine.
  • He was a pioneer in the field on fractals in math and in nature.
