Back-to-school season comes with plenty of checklists, from school supplies to class schedules. When it comes to math preparation, families often aren't sure which skills deserve attention first or where knowledge gaps may still exist.
That's why our Mathnasium education specialists created this simple guide to explain what students are expected to know at each grade level, help you spot common warning signs, and choose the level of support that best fits your student's needs before school officially begins.
Florida's public schools follow the same statewide standards and assessment system, although districts may differ in curriculum and pacing.
For example, students in communities such as Hunters Creek and Celebration are held to the same math expectations at each grade level, even though the school year begins on August 11 in Orange County Public Schools and August 10 in the School District of Osceola County.
The Florida B.E.S.T. Standards, short for Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking, outline what students are expected to learn in math at each grade level. They cover number sense, algebraic reasoning, geometric reasoning, functions, data analysis, probability, and related topics like fractions and financial literacy from kindergarten through Grade 12.
Student progress is then measured through the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST), a statewide assessment that helps schools monitor how well students meet Florida's math expectations throughout the year.
In mathematics, FAST applies to Grades K–8, while high school students take End-of-Course assessments in subjects such as Algebra 1 and Geometry. Because the first FAST assessment window opens shortly after school begins, it reflects the skills students bring back from the summer.

Math support before school starts often comes in three broad levels, depending on how much structure, guidance, and targeted intervention your child needs right now.
While short practice at home can be very effective for reinforcing skills, deeper conceptual gaps often require a more structured learning environment than most families can realistically provide on their own.
Light, Flexible Support: This option works well when you notice few or no warning signs. Short, consistent practice through a math app, a card game, or a brief mental math conversation is usually enough to keep skills fresh before school begins.
