FAQ

FAQs about ACT Test Prep in La Jolla

  • What math do I need to know for the ACT?

    ACT tests proficiency in:

    • Pre-Algebra and Algebra, including basic operations, equations, and inequalities.
    • Geometry, where students will encounter questions about shapes, angles, and areas, while Trigonometry involves sine, cosine, and tangent functions.
    • Trigonometry, including sine, cosine, and tangent functions.
    • Statistics & Probability, where they’ll focus on interpreting data and calculating key measures, such as mean and probability.
  • What is the difference between ACT and SAT math?

The ACT and SAT math sections differ mainly in the topics they cover and the type of questions they ask.

    • Math topics: The SAT focuses more on algebra and data analysis, while the ACT covers a wider range of topics, including geometry and trigonometry.
    • Question formats: The ACT has more straightforward questions, while the SAT includes word problems that require more steps to solve.
    • Scoring: The scoring scales are also different: the ACT is scored from 1–36, while the SAT is scored from 200–800.
    • Allotted Time: The ACT allows approximately 1 minute per question, while the SAT allows about 1.5 minutes.
    • Tools: Another difference is that the ACT allows calculators for all math questions, while the SAT limits their use to one section.

Students can better prepare for each test by considering the range of topics and question formats, adjusting their approach based on their strengths and preferences.

  • What is a good math score on ACT?

A good math score on the ACT depends on the student’s college goals and the schools they’re applying to.

The ACT math section is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. The national average is between 20 and 21.

Generally, a score of 24-26 is considered competitive for most colleges and universities. For more selective schools, such as top-tier universities, a score of 30-34 would be considered competitive.

The perfect score of 36 is rare but highly impressive.

If the student is aiming for merit-based scholarships, a score of 28 or higher could increase their eligibility.

Ultimately, a good score is one that aligns with the admission requirements of the student’s desired schools.
