Ariana joined us at the end of last summer with the goal in mind of crushing her algebra 1 class so well this year that she could be sure she would get into IB Bartow High School. We first spent a significant amount of time addressing some pre-algebra skills before getting to the good stuff, and I could tell her parents were nervous about whether we'd get enough algebra done in time before May. Her dad said she only needed a 4 on her EOC but they wanted a 5, and he promised they would go shoot sporting clays with me if she ended up getting a 5. I'll let this photo of us doing the talking...
She's now ready to move on to geometry, but she definitely has a lot more algebra that would be beneficial for her to learn from us before she's really ready to thrive in algebra 2 or a high school algebra-based physics class, because unfortunately the standard in schools is so low around here these says that just getting a 5/5 on an EOC really doesn't mean all her bases are covered.

Meet Teagan, a 7th grader who was on track to be placed in Pre-Algebra next year in 8th grade, which is a little behind the curve than we would like to see. She has been working with us for some time, and let me tell you, when we first met, she was NOT thrilled when she found out she was going to be spending a lot of time doing math with us over the next few months. But guess what? As of the end of the school year, she already improved her FAST test from a 2 to a 4, and her school already decided she gets to go into Algebra 1 instead of Pre-Algebra in 8th grade, a goal I thought was realistic but would probably take us through the end of summer to achieve. She successfully jumped up a whole Math Path tier which is amazing! Her parents were so happy that they had an agreement with her where she could earn some Beats headphones, and sure enough, Teagan held up her end of the bargain finishing the school year with an A and they held up their end of the bargain, and look who's thrilled to be at Mathnasium now. Teagan is fun to have around the center and I look forward to seeing her continue her journey to math dominance as we definitely still have a lot of work cut out for us to make sure she can crush Algebra 1.

Christine came to us from another tutoring location, and apparently is having so much fun here at Mathnasium that she's even asking her parents when she can come back/can she come again more often, etc. I think it might have something to do with the extra screen time her parents allow her whenever she has a good day at Mathnasium....but she's one of our kids that always has a good day! She's averaging around 8 pages an hour, occasionally surpasses double digits, and is always perfectly cooperative with our instructors. We need more young kids like Christine around setting a good example for some of our more rowdy younger kids.
Christine has only spent a little over 3 months with us, and already improved her standardized testing from a 2 to a 4 which is WAY ahead of schedule with us, and get this...she's only been coming once a week! I miscommunicated to the parents that they are in fact allowed to be coming twice a week, so just think of all the gains she's going to be getting over the next few months as she makes up those missed sessions-she is going to start off the school year a completely different person than the one who just wrapped up 2nd grade.

Brennan was already super cool because he wanted one of our Mathnasium visors (more than can be said of most of our employees) to wear when he's out golfing, but now he's extra cool because he's already improved his FAST testing from a 2 to a 4, and he's barely even made a dent in the learning plan we have carved out for him since he's still pretty new to us, so we can expect great things from him once school starts up again in the fall.

First Annual Wonderhere Home School Conference

At the first annual Home School Conference hosted by Wonderhere Lakeland, we hung out, listened to guest speakers to gain valuable insight into the minds of homeschoolers from our local community. Pictured here are 2 of our instructors Carolina and Elle, both of whom were students at Mathnasium when they were younger, and Elle actually was homeschooled for much of her primary and secondary education. All of the attendees we met were awarded a few free sessions to come in and get their kids math worked on, and also given the opportunity to guess the weight of a watermelon and how many MathnasiuM&M's with inside the jar to win a grand prize of a free month enrollment with us.

Mathnasium Math Nights are super fun events where we go to schools and bring a bunch of math games and get parents, teacher, and kids all involved, at no cost to the school. We just hosted our first ever Math Night for Homeschoolers in our very own center, opening up the opportunity for those who wouldn't normally have the chance. We had a potluck style lunch, and even had one of our instructors Ethan providing us with some live music-he jams out in the band for his church! I can't wait to bring him to one of our mega math nights at a school this fall and get him up on stage. We got amazing feedback from the homeschool math night and are looking to host one again soon hopefully before the end of summer for families who didn't have the chance to attend.

Young Javier here always seems to finish up before his sister Amanda, and whenever we have some time to kill he loves to be kept busy with some unpaid child la-I mean, uh, internship opportunities. Here he was seen helping instructors Jaxon and Sumi stuff envelopes full of free tutoring goodness for the 4 community outreach events where we worked over 36 hours. Now, somehow all the uniquely personalized envelopes got all mixed up, and we basically had to check every single one and reorganize all our boxes the next day, and I'm not saying this logistical error occurred while Javier was on the clock, but unfortunately I don't think he's going to be invited back for another internship anytime soon.

Last year we were presented with a certificate of appreciation, which we greatly appreciated and are proudly displaying on the wall in our center. It seems they forgot to give us one this year, but I'm sure it will be arriving in the mail to our location at 4758 S FL Avenue any day now!

Summer Hours-business as usual!

I get asked all the time if we're open over the summer...of course we are! Summer is the BEST time to be in here. If your kid barely survived the school year, when else do you think they're going to be able to focus on addressing their foundational gaps and work on getting caught up without the distractions of homework from school that they are ill-equipped to be working on in the first place?!?
In fact, we are running a little discounted, short term 3-month enrollment over the summer that includes a waived registration fee, but in order to take advantage of that you must enroll no later than July 1st so if you were thinking of coming aboard, or have a friend you want to recommend to us so your kid has a friend to hang out with at Mathnasium, there's never been a better time than now!
