Step Up Scholarships Alert! New Deadlines!

If your student is homeschooled, private school, had special needs, or is K-5th grade, they could qualify for a scholarship, and one of the many places you can use it is with us!

Applications for the Private School, Unique Abilities and PEP Scholarships are now available for the 2025-26 school year for new and renewing families. Please remind your families that they can apply now.
Here is some helpful information to share with them:
Deadlines: To ensure renewing students receive priority for the Private School Scholarship and the Unique Abilities Scholarship, families must submit their application by Wednesday, April 30. After this date, all students will be processed as "new students" due to legislative changes for this year.
The deadline for the PEP Scholarship for new and renewal students is Wednesday, April 30. Due to legislative changes for this year, no PEP Scholarship applications will be accepted after this deadline.
- Families should submit one application per family per program: If a family is applying for a scholarship program for multiple students, the family should include all applicable students on that application before submitting it and moving on to the next scholarship program application. If a family forgets to add a student to an application, they will need to wait until the application shows an "On Hold" or "Complete" status before they can add the missing student.
- Application processing: Processing times vary but may take up to 30 days. Families will receive an email with status changes.

Did you know that you can access practice tests and official versions of last year's exams online anytime from home? FAST, STAR, and EOC practice tests are available if you're curious about what standardized tests your students take 3-4 times a year might look like.
Should your child take these practice tests at home to prepare for the big test at the end of the school year? It depends.
Firstly, these online tests don’t save or provide grades when submitted. As a parent, you'll need to manually track and grade your child's answers if you choose to use them as an assessment tool. However, you likely already have a good understanding of your child's strengths and weaknesses from their weekly unit tests at school. Without a plan to address any identified weaknesses, simply having your child take these tests may not be particularly beneficial.
Secondly, taking a practice test just to "get an idea of what to expect" might not be as useful as it seems. It's more important to focus on addressing your child’s weak areas rather than spending time on a practice test. The math covered in these tests is what they’ve been learning all year. This information is usually available in the class syllabus or online grade-specific standards. While seeing the test format ahead of time can ease nerves, true preparation comes from thoroughly understanding and retaining the material learned in school.

At Mathnasium, we assess essential skills for each grade level and focus on filling in any knowledge gaps from the ground up. Many students have significant gaps that need addressing before they can excel in their current studies. Math is cumulative, and untreated gaps can lead to struggles with new material. If your child lacks critical skills, it's more beneficial to focus on closing these gaps rather than tackling practice tests.
For students who demonstrate through our assessments that they have a solid grasp of the material for their grade level, taking practice tests can be useful. Our assessments align closely with what students need to know to perform well on end-of-year tests and future academic challenges. We often encounter students with good grades who don't retain information beyond the current school quarter or don't cover all necessary material by year-end, leaving them unprepared.

Biophysicists have determined that during morphogenesis (the biological process that causes an organism to develop its shape and structure), the size and spacing of a zebra's stripes are encoded using the mathematical constant Pi!
