Some Success Stories

Dec 23, 2024 | Lakeland Highlands

Want to know the secret to math success in 2025? It starts with confidence. At Mathnasium, we transform the way students see math, and more importantly, how they see themselves.

We've seen countless students transform from "I can't" to "I've got this!" Through personalized instruction and consistent encouragement, students develop problem-solving skills that extend far beyond math class, empowering them to tackle any academic challenge.

Jackson's story

Meet Jackson, an impressive 5th grader who started with us in 4th grade and is now conquering our 6th-grade curriculum! Recently, he scored his first goal in competitive soccer—not just recreational—and took the stage in a school play, showcasing his growing confidence and talents. His mom shared that he’s been excelling this quarter, earning perfect 100% scores on all his assignments! While he did encounter a challenge with a test on multiplying decimals, we already had that identified in his learning plan and began working on it immediately. Thanks to our proactive learning plan, we’ve ensured he’s caught up and can now focus on reinforcing any classroom concepts as they arise. Jackson’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and support, and we’re excited to see him continue to thrive!

Vraj's story

Meet Vraj! At the start of this school year, his school made the surprising decision to place him in 7th grade math instead of Pre-Algebra. This caught us off guard, as our initial assessments indicated he was more than capable of thriving in Pre-Algebra. Vraj joined us in late August, and by late September, he was excelling so much in class that his school recognized his progress and moved him up to Pre-Algebra, where he truly belonged. It’s a proud moment for us at Mathnasium, as we always believed in Vraj’s potential to shine!

Magan's Story

Magan is currently a sophomore in college and a full time local kindergarten teacher. Last year she had to take college algebra, it didn't go too well, and she opted to retake it this fall. She came to us at the beginning of June, and we got right to work addressing as many pre-algebra foundational gaps as we could. Once we got into the school semester, we provided ongoing support by continuing to address her foundation, while helping reinforce more specifically what she was being tested on in class each month as appropriate. It was a good thing she came to us as early as she did, because it would be very hard to teach her higher level concepts such as algebra without having first spent the time making sure she had the prerequisite skills necessary. I would urge everyone to learn from Magan how to be proactive when it comes to math education, and come in earlier than you think you have a problem.

New Florida Law on Math Support for Elementary Students

Dear Parents and Educational Partners,

We want to inform you about the new state law, "6A-6.0533 Determining Substantial Math Deficiency," that was finalized this November. This law mandates support for students in kindergarten through 4th grade who fall in the bottom 10th percentile through federally required plans such as Individual Education Plans (IEPs), 504s, or progress monitoring plans, or others. These are plans will require a lot of time and resources from the school, causing them to be stretched thinner than they already are.

While this law aims to help struggling students, it may disproportionately impact underperforming schools, which could be overwhelmed by the amount of extra support they have to start providing, compared to higher performing schools that could experience little to no change if they barely have any 10th percentile students at their school. We actually fear this won't cover enough students, as there are plenty of students who perform at just above the 10th percentile who likely need some sort of intervention to get them on a more promising math path, since we believe every student has the potential for greatness. If you have any questions about whether your child is performing to the best of their potential, please bring them by for a free assessment and let us tell you what we find.

Is Your School Prepared?

Implementing these plans can be challenging for schools, and Mathnasium can assist by improving students' math skills, potentially reducing the need for formal plans.
